C'est l'adaptation de la pièce de théâtre américaine A Majority of One (titre français Le Pont japonais) de Leonard Spigelgass de 1959.

Synopsis

M Jacoby, une veuve originaire de Brooklyn dont le fils a été tué par les Japonais pendant la guerre, accepte à regret d'accompagner sa fille Alice et son gendre Jerry pour un voyage au Japon, où Jerry doit participer à la négociation d'un traité commercial. Lors de la croisière trans-pacifique, le ressentiment de M Jacoby à propos des jamonais est encore très fort lorsqu'elle encontre sur M. Asano, un industriel japonais dont la famille a elle aussi été beaucoup touchée par la guerre. Leur amitié naissante est malmenée lorsque Jerry suspecte M. Asano, lui-même un des négociateurs du traité, d'avoir cherché un gain politique dans cette relation. Bien que M Jacoby n'y croie pas vraiment, elle refuse de voir M. Asano lors de leur dernière soirée à bord. Une fois au Japon, Jerry offense sans le faire exprès M. Asano, et la conférence est annulée. M Jacoby se rend alors chez M. Asano. Après une soirée très agréable, il accepte de reprendre les négociations. Alors que les trois Américains se préparent à repartir, M Jacoby est surprise de recevoir une demande en mariage de M. Asano, mais aussi par la réaction négative d'Alice et Jerry. Mais en fait elle refuse surtout car elle considère que M. Asano et elle sont encore trop marqués par leurs histoires personnelles. Des mois plus tard, M. Asano arrive à New York comme délégué aux Nations unies. Il rencontre à nouveau M Jacoby, qui accepte désormais qu'il lui fasse la cour.

Bertha Jacoby (Rosalind Russell), a Jewish widow, is convinced by her daughter Alice Black (Madlyn Rhue) to move from Brooklyn, New York to Tokyo, in order for Bertha to be closer to her along with her husband, Jerry Black (Ray Danton), now stationed at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo. Her feelings about the Japanese with regards to her son's death in World War II start to change on board the ship to Tokyo, where she meets Koichi Asano, a Japanese Buddhist businessman (Alec Guinness), who also lost a spouse and two children in the War. The two share a bond over lives, their families, and their faiths, which develops into a romance. When she announces to her family of Asano's courtship, her daughter and son-in-law object to the idea of an interracial marriage. The movie ends with the two enjoying a Sabbath dinner.

When the film begins, a musical show before closed down before it has had a chance to even open. In the waning days of World War II, the United States Navy cargo ship Reluctant and her crew are stationed in the "backwater" areas of the Pacific Ocean. The executive officer/cargo chief, Lieutenant Junior Grade Douglas A. "Doug" Roberts (Henry Fonda), tries to shield the dispirited crew from the harsh and unpopular captain, Lieutenant Commander Morton (James Cagney). Eager to join the fighting, Roberts repeatedly requests a transfer. Morton is forced by regulation to forward his requests, but refuses to endorse them, which means they are always rejected. Roberts shares quarters with Ensign Frank Thurlowe Pulver (Jack Lemmon). Pulver spends most of his time idling in his bunk and avoids the captain at all costs, so much so that Morton is actually unaware that the ensign is even part of the crew.

Will Stockdale (Andy Griffith) is a backward, backwoods rube from outside Callville, Georgia who may or may not be smarter than he looks.
