A Raisin in the Sun is a 1961 drama film, starring Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee, Claudia McNeil, Diana Sands, Roy Glenn, and Louis Gossett, and adapted from the play of the same name by Lorraine Hansberry. It follows a black family that wants a better life away from the city.

In 2005, A Raisin in the Sun was selected for preservation in the United States of America National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Synopsis

Au cours des années 1950, une famille pauvre afro-américaine, les Younger, vit dans un petit appartement d'un quartier sud de Chicago. La mère, Lena (veuve), reçoit un jour un chèque de 10 000 dollars, montant d'une assurance-vie que son époux avait contractée. Chacun fait alors des projets : la mère souhaite acquérir une maison dans un quartier résidentiel ; son fils, Walter Lee, voudrait monter un commerce d'alcool ; l'épouse de ce dernier, Ruth, y voit l'occasion de vivre plus décemment et d'élever convenablement leur fils ; Beneatha, la jeune sœur de Walter Lee, pourrait ainsi entamer des études de médecine…

Set in the early 1900s in the fictional Catfish Row section of Charleston, South Carolina, which serves as home to a black fishing community, the story focuses on the titular characters, crippled beggar Porgy, who travels about in a goat-drawn cart, and the drug-addicted Bess, who lives with stevedore Crown, the local bully.
