Synopsis
Bessie Smith est une jeune chanteuse de Chattanooga, dans le Tennessee. À la mort de leurs parents, William et Laura, elle et ses frères et sœurs deviennent orphelins. Leur sœur aînée, Viola, va les élever. Viola est sévère avec eux et l'enfance de Bessie est malheureuse. Elle et son frère Clarence cherchent à travailler pour des spectacles de vaudeville locaux. Ses ambitions scéniques sont frustrées par les producteurs qui ne veulent pas en vedette des femmes noires à la peau foncée dans leurs spectacles. Bessie se faufile dans le train de l'interprète Ma Rainey et lui demande de se joindre à son spectacle. Ma Rainey prend Bessie sous son aile et l'aide à développer ses capacités jusqu'à ce que la popularité de Bessie provoque la séparation des deux femmes. Bessie laisse aussi Clarence pour lancer sa propre carrière.Actors

In 1927, Roxie Hart sees star Velma Kelly perform ("All That Jazz") at a Chicago theater. Wanting stardom for herself, she begins an affair with Fred Casely, who claims to know the manager. After the show, Velma is arrested for killing her husband Charlie and sister Veronica, who were in bed together. A month later, Casely admits to Roxie that he has no showbiz connections and just wanted her body. Enraged, she shoots him dead. She convinces her husband Amos to take the blame, telling him she killed a burglar in self-defense. As Amos confesses to the detective, Roxie fantasizes that she is singing a song devoted to her husband ("Funny Honey"). However, when the detective brings up evidence that Roxie and Casely were having an affair, Amos recants; Roxie furiously admits what really happened and is arrested. Ambitious District Attorney Harrison announces he will seek the death penalty.

This movie was inspired by a true story, following the life of a thug being released from prison after an 8 year prison sentence. After the untimely death of a small-town church choir director (Kris Kristofferson) in Pacashau, Georgia, Vy Rose Hill (Latifah), a no-nonsense mother raising two teens alone, takes control of the choir using the traditional Gospel style that their Pastor Dale (Courtney B. John Matthews (Dwayne Johnson), owner of a construction company, receives a call from his ex-wife Sylvie Collins (Melina Kanakaredes).
