Synopsis
Calamari Union tells the story of sixteen men, all called Frank (inspired by Frank Armoton) apart from one man called Pekka. Collectively the Franks and Pekka are unhappy with life in Kallio, a working-class district of Helsinki, and decide to move to Eira, an upper-class district, imagining it to be unspoiled. In fact the two districts are not very far apart, but the journey across the city takes on epic proportions, as each of the men falls by the wayside through marriage, work or death.Actors

Ilona Koponen (Kati Outinen), a head waitress at Dubrovnik restaurant, is married to Lauri (Kari Väänänen), a tram driver. The couple live in a small, modestly furnished apartment in Helsinki. As they both come home from work late one night, Lauri surprises Ilona with a new television which he purchased on store credit. Marja (Kati Outinen) is a simple peasant woman married to her older husband Juha (Sakari Kuosmanen). They lead a very simple country life, spending most of their days farming and tending to their livestock. Marja's world is turned upside down when Shemeikka (André Wilms) comes to the happily married couple asking them for help with his broken down sports convertible and a place to spend the night. As Juha works to repair the car, Shemeikka attempts to lure Marja to leave Juha and come to the city with him. A hesitant Marja does not want to leave her husband at first but ultimately gives in to temptation after dreaming of a wonderful new life in a big city. Shemeikka and Marja leave for the city but Marja's dream quickly becomes a nightmare when Shemeikka enslaves her in a brothel.

The film begins with an unnamed man arriving by train to Helsinki. After falling asleep in Kaisaniemi Park, he is mugged and beaten by hoodlums and is severely injured in the head, losing consciousness. He awakes and wanders back to the train station and collapses in its bathroom. He awakes the second time in a hospital and finds that he has lost his memory. He starts his life from scratch, living in container dwellings, finding clothes with help from the Salvation Army and making friends with the poor.

Marcel (André Wilms) is an impoverished Parisian poet and playwright who is evicted from his extremely modest room after he is unable to pay rent for it. While roaming the streets of Paris, he meets Rodolfo (Matti Pellonpää), a painter from Albania who is almost equally poor and is in the country illegally. They quickly discover they are kindred spirits since they both share the same love for art without much regard for their worldly well-being. The two eventually make another friend in Schaunard (Kari Väänänen), an Irish composer who is now renting Marcel's former room. The three friends help each other in the daily struggle to survive by sharing whatever little money they have among each other in order to maintain a basic and simple standard of living.

À la suite de la fermeture de la mine où travaillent Taisto Kasurinen et son père, ce dernier se suicide et Taisto part pour Helsinki avec la voiture décapotable léguée par son père. En route, on l'agresse et lui vole toutes ses économies. Il survit en travaillant au noir comme manutentionnaire sur le port et rencontre une jeune femme avec un enfant. Il cherche vainement du travail et retrouve un de ses agresseurs qu'il poursuit et c'est lui qui est emprisonné pour agression à main armée. En prison, il commence à rêver de quitter le pays pour une vie nouvelle. Il s'évade avec son compagnon de cellule mais les choses ne vont pas comme il voulait.
