Based on the novel L'Homme de chevet by Eric Holder, with a screenplay by Alain Monne and Nathalie Vailloud, the film is about a beautiful, free-spirited woman who becomes bedridden following a terrible accident. Against her better judgement, she hires a drunk middle-aged former boxer to cook and care for her. Although unqualified for the position, he is desperate to work, and slowly he wins the trust of the woman, who teaches him how to read. Through his help, she is forced to consider the potential happiness that awaits her in the outside world. Cartagena was filmed on location in Cartagena, Bolívar, Colombia.
The actor Christopher Lambert was six months in Cartagena training with coach Anibal Gonzalez during his preparation for the role.
Synopsis
En Colombie, Léo (Christophe Lambert) est un ancien champion de boxe qui entre au service de Muriel (Sophie Marceau), comme garde-malade. Muriel, riche française, tétraplégique à la suite d'un accident de voiture, clouée au lit, est assistée de Lucia qui est amoureuse de sa patronne. Léo, alcoolique, n'a pas vraiment laissé tomber la boxe : dans le gymnase de Valdès, ils décident d'entraîner deux jeunes femmes, Lina et Miranda et parient 5 000 $ sur l'avenir sportif de leurs deux recrues. Léo s'occupe de Lina, prostituée sans réelle attache, et Valdès, de Miranda. Petit à petit, des sentiments naissent entre Muriel et Léo et entre Lina et Léo.Actors

The storyline opens in Tokyo where JM (Rikiya Kurokawa), a rich young IT worker and sometime computer hacker, is attempting to purchase a 1967 model Citroën DS, or Goddess, as it is known to French car aficionados. JM lives in a pristine but unfriendly hi-tech apartment. The smog filled city is blue-grey and bleak. He rarely speaks to his live-in girlfriend and is preoccupied with other possessions—his latest snorkeling gear as well as the pet snakes and other exotic reptiles he keeps in the flat. After tracing, on the Internet, a perfectly restored Citroën owned by a couple in Australia, JM abandons his job and flies out to purchase the rare car, which he thinks can fill the emptiness in his life.

As adults, Benjamin "Benny" Pearl (Aidan Quinn) and his mentally ill sister Juniper "Joon" Pearl (Mary Stuart Masterson), live together following the accidental death of their parents. Tracy Turnblad (Ricki Lake) and her best friend, Penny Pingleton (Leslie Ann Powers), audition for The Corny Collins Show, a popular Baltimore teenage dance show based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show. Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) is a glossy 35-year-old sports agent working for Sports Management International (SMI). After having a life-altering epiphany about his role as a sports agent, he writes a mission statement about perceived dishonesty in the sports management business and his desire to work with fewer clients so as to produce better quality. In turn, Management decides to send Bob Sugar (Jay Mohr), Jerry's protégé, to fire him. Jerry and Sugar call all of Jerry's clients to try convincing them not to hire the services of the other. Sugar secures most of Jerry's previous clients. Jerry speaks to Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding, Jr.), one of his clients who is disgruntled with his contract. Rod tests Jerry's resolve through a very long telephone conversation while Sugar is able to convince the rest of Jerry's clients to stick with SMI instead. Leaving the office, Jerry announces that he will start his own agency and asks if anyone is willing to join him, to which only 26-year-old single mother Dorothy Boyd (Renée Zellweger) agrees. Meanwhile, Frank "Cush" Cushman (Jerry O'Connell), a superstar quarterback prospect who expects to be the number one pick in the NFL Draft, also stays with Jerry after he makes a visit to the Cushman home. However, Sugar is able to convince Cushman and his father at the last minute to sign with SMI over Jerry. Cushman's father implies they decided to sign with Sugar over Jerry when they saw Jerry attending to Tidwell; an African-American player, versus his son (a white player).

Claire Poussin, a young woman in her early 30s whose mother has recently died from Alzheimer's, has been having memory loss problems since being struck by lightning. She believes she is showing the first signs of the disease, but her sister Nathalie thinks the problem is temporary. Claire seeks help by entering a clinic for people with memory-loss problems, which is located in a big country house and run by Prof. Christian Licht. Prof. Licht is having an affair with therapist Marie Bjorg, which he thinks is hidden from his patients, but isn't. When both of them are released, they move in together, but find that their condition severely affects their lives.
