Synopsis
Après avoir purgé une peine de trois ans de prison, Sonny Mann retourne dans sa ville natale sur la côte de Floride, où la vie et les habitants n’ont pas beaucoup changé. Parmi eux le chef de la pègre locale, Eddie Vance, qui doit de l’argent à Sonny. Quand ce dernier se présente pour réclamer son dû, il est passé à tabac, puis sa maison est détruite par une explosion et son père est assassiné. Assoiffé de vengeance contre Vance et son gang, Sonny emménage chez son vieil ami Dave Lockhart. Dave est le shérif du comté, il est marié à une infirmière, Ann, et ils ont deux enfants. Bientôt, une idylle se noue entre l’ancien détenu et AnnActors

Judd plays Ruby, the title character and narrator of the film. As the film begins, she is leaving Tennessee, landing in Panama City, Florida, a summer resort town she visited as a child. Although she arrives there in fall, at the beginning of the off-season, she gets a job at Chambers Beach Emporium, a souvenir store run by Mrs. Chambers (played by Lyman), overcoming the owner's initial rejection of her employment application by telling her "I've done retail before, and I work real cheap." Fonda plays Ulee (short for Ulysses) Jackson, a Vietnam veteran, widower and grandfather. He is a beekeeper by profession, who raises two granddaughters (Biel and Zima) because his son (Wood) is in prison and his daughter-in-law Helen (Dunford), a drug addict, has run away. The son implores him to look for his wife and bring her home. Marv (Mickey Rourke) regains consciousness on a highway overlooking the Projects, surrounded by several dead young men and a crashed police car, and with no memory of how he got there. He retraces his steps, recalling that since it's Saturday, he watched Nancy Callahan (Jessica Alba) dance at Kadie's Saloon. Stepping outside, he encounters four rich frat boys burning a homeless man alive. When Marv intervenes, the leader of the frat boys shoots him in the arm, calling him "Bernini Boy," which Marv mishears as "Bernie." They flee; Marv follows, stealing a Police car on the way, which he crashes into their car, leading to his blackout and memory loss.
