As a mother reads Little Red Riding Hood to her son, she is killed before his eyes. Later, five young actors including Sophie Jeanne and her four friends are invited to the castle of Axel de Fersen to act in a modernized stage-play of Little Red Riding Hood. They are greeted by the gamekeeper Stephane, Baron Berléand Fernsen, the owner who uses a wheelchair, and his deaf mute son Nicolas. After dinner, their host retires to bed as the five friends settle in for a night of drinking and dancing but soon find that the Baron has vanished, leaving only a blood stain. The actors return to party which upsets Sophie as she feels their behavior is disrespectful and oblivious to the danger. Sophie wants to leave the strange castle, but the others say that she could too easily get lost in the woods. Her friends are slowly killed one by one: Matilda is stabbed in the shower by a man disguised as a wolf and later Jeanne is killed. The three survivors begin to panic and try to find Stephane who they believe is the killer. When their other friend Wilfried is killed, Sophie accuses Matthew of being the murderer. This upsets Matthew, but the two soon meet up with the wolf: Axel de Fersen. Sophie manages to kill him and flees the castle with both Matthew and Nicolas.

A murder victim is found near a river by Hélène Batistelli (Mélanie Thierry), a psychiatrist. Richard Kemp (Jean-Hugues Anglade), a French Police Captain, investigates the murder, and discovers it is similar to those in a serial-killer case he worked on in the beginning of his career. Kemp is attacked by an unknown assailant, thrown into the river, returns to land, and finds he is twenty years in the past, just before the murders begin. Kemp attempts to prevent the murders but becomes the main suspect only to find help from a younger Hélène.

Philadelphie 1988, Thomas Lockhart (Boyd Holbrook), jeune agent de police, est appelé sur le site de l’accident d’un bus public. La victime, chauffeuse du bus, présente la particularité d’avoir répandu son cerveau liquéfié, ainsi que la marque de trois étranges perforations dans la nuque. L’information est alors communiquée que deux cas semblables se sont produits dans la ville. Durant l’investigation, une quatrième victime affirme, avant de mourir, d’avoir été agressée par une femme. La poursuite d’une tueuse en série est menée et l’agent Lockhart parvient à tuer l’assassin localisé. Philadelphie 1997, la tueuse refait surface et tue à nouveau. L’inspecteur Lockhart est le seul à penser qu’elle n’est pas une imitatrice mais, contre toute logique, que la tueuse est vraiment réapparue. La traque devient alors une obsession.

In Queens, New York during October 1999, John Sullivan (Caviezel), a 36-year-old homicide detective, breaks up with his girlfriend Samantha (Melissa Errico) with the reason partially attributed to the trauma caused by the death of his fireman father Frank (Quaid). Still living in the same house where he grew up, he discovers his father's Heathkit single-sideband ham radio and begins transmitting radio signals. Because of highly localized electro-temporal spatial effects caused by unusual aurora borealis activity, John somehow makes contact with his father exactly 30 years in the past on the day before Frank's death in a warehouse fire. The ensuing conversation results in Frank thinking John is a stalker. Before the connection cuts out, John is able to shout out the circumstances that led to Frank's death. The next day as little things brought up in their conversation prove true, Frank believes and heeds John's words, escaping the fire to safety. The father and son reconnect on the HAM radio set later that evening, with Frank sharing his dreams and his hopes for his son, and John recounting the details of the Mets-Orioles World Series, which is just beginning in Frank's timeline in 1969. John also reveals to Frank that he now dies of lung cancer in 1989 due to his smoking habit.

A detective named Fisher, who has become an expatriate living in Cairo, undergoes hypnosis in order to recall his last case. The postwar Germany of his dreamlike recollection is a dystopia, dark and decaying. Fisher remembers pursuing an elusive killer called the "Lotto Murderer", who was strangling and then mutilating young girls who were selling lottery tickets. He attempts to track down the killer using the controversial methods outlined in a book entitled The Element of Crime, written by his disgraced mentor, Osborne. He is joined in his search by a prostitute named Kim, who, it turns out, has had a child by his target. Fisher's search is based on a tailing report written by Osborne when trying to track down a murderer who had been killing in the same way as the "Lotto Murderer", but who, supposedly, has since died in a crash. The Osborne method requires the detective to try to identify with the mind of the killer. This he does, but, in so doing, begins to behave more and more like a serial killer himself.
