The film's melodramatic storyline portrays the return of a leading singer to her hometown, where her father wishes her to settle down and marry. It is based on the 1893 play Heimat by Hermann Sudermann.
Froelich won the award for best director at the 1938 Venice Film Festival for this film.
Synopsis
La petite ville de Moselle, alors allemande, d'Imlingen, en 1885. Dans le cadre d'un festival d'opéra, les organisateurs ont invité une célèbre cantatrice américaine, Maddalena dell'Orto, au grand dam de certains notables qui auraient préféré une chanteuse allemande. Mais Maddalena, venue avec son ami et collègue Rohrmoser, déclare très vite qu'ils sont tous deux d'origine allemande. Bientôt, il s'avère que la chanteuse est en réalité Magda von Schwartze, native d'Imlingen, qu'elle a quittée huit ans auparavant...Actors

Constantinople, 1912. Le marquis de Sévigné, colonel français, vient d'arriver pour conseiller l'armée turque du sultan. Quand Sévigné fait la connaissance de Lady Mary, il est impressionné par l'amour et la tendresse avec laquelle la femme parle de son fils. Le lendemain, il se rend chez elle, il est accueilli par Lady Edith. Elle n'est pas seulement la cousine de lord Falkland, mais aussi sa maîtresse.

Hallers est le jour un procureur qui condamne le crime et la nuit est un criminel. The film is set in the First World War and is based on a 1932 play by Hans Fritz von Zwehl (Frühlingsschlacht, 'Spring Battle', originally also titled Unternehmen Michael) about the German offensive Operation Michael during the First World War, which was launched on 21 March 1918. The British are in possession of the village of Beaurevoir. The Germans plan to send in assault troops to take the village, but their commanding officer, Captain Hill, is injured the night before. A desk officer, Major zur Linden (Mathias Wieman), volunteers to lead the mission. The unit succeed but find themselves surrounded by the enemy. They discuss their options and Major zur Linden's advocacy of a heroic death for the sake of their country wins out over the defeatist and the traditional military pragmatist; the Germans declare a ceasefire and then the commanding general, in full knowledge, gives the order for their artillery to bombard the village as the British are storming it, thereby sacrificing their own men in order to kill the enemy. The sacrifice is not in vain; it enables the Germans to push forward to the British fortress, the 'Labyrinth'.

Lily une jeune paysanne vient de perdre son père, elle est recueillie par sa tante, Madame Rasmussen, libraire à Berlin, une femme autoritaire, rigide et légèrement portée sur l'alcool. De la fenêtre de sa chambre Lily aperçoit un atelier de sculpteur qui la fascine. Un jour, Richard le sculpteur entre dans la librairie et semble captivé par le corps de Lily, il la persuade de venir poser pour elle. Acceptant après avoir hésité, Lily déjouant la surveillance de sa tante se rend chez Richard qui la convainc de se déshabiller pour prendre la pose. Bientôt une très belle sculpture prend forme et les deux jeunes gens entament une idylle. Survient alors le baron von Merzbach qui est un client de Richard et qui tombe en admiration devant la statue, il demande à être présenté à Lily. Quelque temps plus tard, le baron persuade Richard qu'avec ce dernier, Lily n'aura aucun avenir, alors qu'avec lui, elle aura la reconnaissance, la fortune, le titre…par lâcheté Richard accepte. Le soir alors que Lily s'apprête à se rendre chez Richard, Madame Rasmussen la surprend et la chasse de son domicile. Elle se rend chez Richard, mais celui-ci a disparu, et c'est alors le baron von Merzbach qui l'accueille à sa place en lui apprenant que Richard est parti en voyage. Le baron-ci lui propose le mariage, désorientée et choquée, Lily accepte. Elle fait son éducation dans le grand monde, apprend la musique, le français, la danse mais n'est pas heureuse. Von Prell le palefrenier du baron s'éprend d'elle et lui déclare sa flemme pendant une leçon d'équitation, Lily le rabroue.
