Il Futuro is a 2013 drama film directed by Alicia Scherson. Based on Roberto Bolaño's novel Una novelita lumpen, the film stars Manuela Martelli and Rutger Hauer. The film was shot in Italy, Chile, and Germany, and it is an Italian-Chilean-German-Spanish production.

Synopsis

Narrated from the future, Bianca tells the story of how she and her younger brother, Tomas, are orphaned after their parents die in a car accident. The children of Chilean immigrants, they have no family in Italy. A social worker explains that a bureaucratic problem prevents them from accessing their mother's pension, so they will only receive funds from their father's account. Bianca, old enough to become her brother's guardian, takes a job as an apprentice at a hair salon, though the owner will not allow her to become a hairdresser until she has three years of experience. Tomas, who believes that accidents cause supernatural change to reality, shifts his interest from computers to bodybuilding, and he begins to skip school to hang out at a local gym, where he takes a job as an unpaid intern.

The film is from the perspective of Gonzalo Infante, a privileged Chilean boy, during a time period in which the lower classes are politically mobilized, demanding more rights and forcing fundamental change. At the same time the upper middle class, including Gonzalo's own family, grow fearful of the growing socialist movement and plot against the country's elected president, Salvador Allende. Gonzalo's father, while sympathetic to the poor and not part of the right-wing movement, wants to leave the country to Italy, where he frequently travels for work, to avoid the Socialist policies. Sra. Infante is having an affair with a wealthy older gentleman, who gives Gonzalo gifts to keep him quiet. Gonzalo is sometimes bullied by his sister's boyfriend, who is a violent anti-Allende right-winger who uses nun-chucks to intimidate people. The family often buys products off of the black market, due to rationing and shortages.

The story centers on Leonardo (Ghilherme Lobo), a blind high school student struggling with independence. At the beginning of the film, he and his best friend, Giovana (Tess Amorim), are discussing how they have yet to kiss anyone. Leo is especially distressed because he wants his first kiss to be special, but doesn't believe anyone wants to kiss him. When the day ends, Giovana walks Leo home, his arm linked with hers, and she unlocks his door for him, something she regularly does for him despite her house being a block in the opposite direction. Leo arrives home and his mother expresses distress at Leo's sunburned skin and worry at the thought of leaving Leo home alone while she and his father are out. Leo insists he will be fine, and his mother agrees under certain terms. Leo and Giovana return to school after holiday and classmate Fabio (Pablo Carvalho) makes fun of Leo's loud typewriter. When their professor instructs Fabio to move to the empty seat behind Leo, Fabio outright declines, arguing he will constantly have to assist Leo if he sits there. A new student named Gabriel (Fabio Audi) arrives and takes the empty seat behind Leo.
