Kaugurieši est une fiction historique lettonne en noir et blanc, l'adaptation du roman éponyme de Kārlis Zariņš réalisée par Voldemārs Pūce. C'est le premier long métrage produit par les studios Rīgas Mākslas filmu studija du temps de la République socialiste soviétique de Lettonie, mais le tournage avait débuté en 1940, avant l'occupation de la Lettonie par l'URSS. La première projection a eu lieu en 1941.

Synopsis

L'histoire se déroule en 1802, dans le Gouvernement de Livonie alors sous Empire russe. À la suite de l'instauration de l'impôt par tête, on assiste au soulèvement des paysans, refusant effectuer la corvée. Vīteļu Pēteris prend la tête de la révolte sur le domaine de Kauguri. Un haut fonctionnaire de l'Empire russe, von Ungern-Sternberg est précipité sur place, accompagné de l'unité de grenadiers menés par le major Kapoustine, pour faire régner l'ordre. Un affrontement inégal commence.

In a Europe divided between the two great powers of England and France, the sons of the English king, Henry The Young, Richard, and Geoffrey, lead a rebellion against their own father supported in their fight by the old king of France, Louis and especially by their French mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine. The eldest of the three, Henry, while trying to find allies, is forced to comply the compromises imposed by a land too much divided and with too many lords. But, after the Queen has been captured in an ambush, the war is inevitable. Richard leads the rebel army and, with his bravery, conquered the most of the English territories on French soil, sieging their father the king in the castle of Rouen. But the kings of England and France are much more intertwined then it could seem at a first glance, in fact their plans were established long before the beginning of the rebellion. The three brothers have to face a path filled of traps, betrayal and shifting alliance until the incomplete defeat. But in the process Richard will learn the true meaning of being a knight and will also meet his promise bride Alys.

During the period of Irish history known as The Land War, Irish tenant farmers were being squeezed dry by absentee English landlords. Some resorted to the gun to achieve justice, but others, inspired by the Irish statesman Charles Stewart Parnell (played in a cameo role by Robert Donat), shunned violence and adopted a form of passive resistance. The farmers are led by Hugh Davin (Stewart Granger), who, with the help of the local priest, Father McKeogh (Alastair Sim), encourages his fellow tenants to ostracize their land agent, the bombastic Captain Boycott (Cecil Parker). There is a love interest in the form of Ann Killain (Kathleen Ryan), whose father is also shunned for taking up a farm from which another farmer had been evicted. The resultant stand-off attracts international news coverage and will ultimately introduce a new word – to boycott – to the English language.

1783. Le Parlement est conduit par une coalition entre Charles James Fox et Lord Frederick North. Le roi George III, qui ne les aime guère, est satisfait lorsqu'ils commencent à perdre de leur influence et décide de nommer Premier ministre William Pitt le Jeune. Pitt, dont le père, le comte de Chatham, était un important homme d'état, a seulement 24 ans et il a du mal à être pris au sérieux par les autres hommes politiques. Néanmoins, Pitt est déterminé à lutter contre la corruption et à redonner à l'Angleterre une place importante. Se déroulant entre le 9 mai 1940 (la veille de l’offensive allemande) et début juin 1940, le film se focalise sur le personnage de Churchill et son entourage, en partie par l'œil de sa nouvelle secrétaire privée , chargée de taper télégrammes et courriers. D'abord pressenti comme prochain Premier ministre, Churchill se heurte à une opposition favorable à des pourparlers de paix (en premier Lord Halifax et Chamberlain). Puis on le suit à la tête du gouvernement, dans les affres de la douleur des choix difficiles. Notamment lorsque la guerre éclair refoule les 300 000 hommes de l'armée britannique à Dunkerque, le dos à la mer. Churchill ordonne le sacrifice d'une unité chargée d'une diversion (30e brigade motorisée commandée par le brigadier Nicholson à Calais) et la mobilisation des embarcations civiles pour secourir les armées française et anglaise encerclées à Dunkerque : c'est l'« opération Dynamo » qui débute le 26 mai.

À la fin de son règne, lors du Jubilé de 1887, on découvre la reine empêtrée par l'obséquiosité servile de son entourage. Affectivement, elle est seule depuis la mort de son mari trente ans plus tôt, ce que la scène introductive du banquet ne manque pas de souligner : les convives n'y paraissent que comme des pantins sans partager aucun affect ni propos avec la Reine. Lors de ce banquet, un seul invité se distingue : un des deux Indiens dépêchés par les autorités coloniales depuis la cité d'Agra pour présenter une pièce commémorative, et tenus par le protocole de ne jamais dévisager la Reine lorsqu'ils la lui montrent, ainsi que de se retirer le dos courbé à reculons tout le long du hall. Ce dernier ne respecte pas cette règle et tient un regard appuyé vers la Reine, laquelle ne manquera pas de le trouver beau ("handsome") en rapportant ultérieurement ses impressions auprès de son majordome. Elle réclame ensuite à nouveau sa présence, à la stupéfaction des valets.
