The film is a very loosely based remake of the 1947 film noir classic of the same name that starred Victor Mature, Brian Donlevy, and Richard Widmark. It was screened out of competition at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival. Like the original Kiss of Death, the film was released by 20th Century Fox.
Synopsis
Jimmy Kilmartin is an ex-con living in Astoria in the New York City borough of Queens, trying to stay clean and raising a daughter with his wife Bev. They are both recovering alcoholics. Bev leaves Jimmy alone to go to an AA meeting. While she is gone, Jimmy is awoken by his cousin Ronnie who is in desperate need of a driver to help him move some stolen cars. Jimmy tries to eject Ronnie, knowing that he could go back to prison just for being seen with him. Ronnie's right ring finger is broken, and he confesses that if Jimmy does not help him move the cars, Little Junior Brown will kill him.Actors

In a small western Massachusetts town, Dr. Carolyn Ryan (Meryl Streep) and her sculptor husband Ben (Liam Neeson) seem to live an idyllic life with their two children Jacob (Edward Furlong) and Judith (Julia Weldon). Their world is shattered one evening when Sheriff Fran Conklin (Daniel von Bargen) arrives to tell them that Martha Taverner has been killed and witnesses saw Jacob with her just before she died. Richard Haywood and Justin Pendleton, two wealthy, intellectual high school students, plan to commit the "perfect murder" to prove their superiority over other people. They kill a woman and set up Richard's marijuana dealer, janitor Ray Feathers. They then incinerate the evidence. The case is assigned to Detective Cassie Mayweather and her new partner, Sam Kennedy. The story is narrated by Sunny von Bülow who is in a coma after falling into diabetic shock after a Christmas party. Her husband, the dissolute European aristocrat Claus von Bülow is charged with attempting to murder her by giving the hypoglycemic Sunny an overdose of insulin. Stefan is a German student who has finished his mathematics studies and decides to have an adventure to rid himself of his inhibitions and discard his personal commitments. After hitch-hiking to Paris, he makes a friend playing cards in a bar and they decide to commit a burglary to get some money. He meets a free-spirited American girl called Estelle and follows her to Ibiza. He discovers Estelle is involved with an ex-Nazi German man called Dr. Wolf. Stefan saves Estelle from Dr. Wolf only to find she does not really want to be saved, and she introduces him to heroin (referred to by the old street name, "horse") which she has stolen from Dr. Wolf. Stefan is initially against Estelle using heroin, but having used it previously, she persuades him to try it. Soon Stefan and Estelle are both heavily addicted to heroin. They try to break the addiction using LSD and initially manage to stay clean. However, after a while they're both using heroin again. Unable to break free of the addiction, it quickly spirals out of control leading to a tragic end for Stefan.

The writer and college professor, Alexandre Fayard, researches and gives lectures about the gruesome literary work of the mysterious Japanese writer Shundei Oe, considered by him to be the master of manipulation.
