Paco, a young drug addict, recently mourning the death of his best friend from a heroine overdose, is unable to overcome his addiction on his own. Withdrawal is too painful for Paco, who is under the watchful eye of his severe but concerned widower father, Evaristo Torrecuadrada, a civil guard commandant. To find a detox treatment for Paco, father and son move to Madrid. They are welcome in the household of Paco's feisty grandmother who lives with her faithful old maid, Adela. Luis, âgé d'environ 45 ans, est professeur dans une université mixte d'Espagne dans les années 1970. Lors de son dernier cours avant les vacances, il remarque deux étudiants, Julia et Miguel, occupés à regarder une carte routière. Après la fin du cours, alors qu'il rentre chez lui en voiture, Luis aperçoit les deux mêmes étudiants occupés à faire de l'auto-stop. Il s'arrête et les prend dans sa voiture, puis leur propose de dormir chez lui la nuit avant de reprendre leur route le lendemain. Célibataire, Luis vit dans une vaste demeure aux allures de manoir jouxtée d'un grand jardin : il est le dernier héritier d'une riche famille et donne des cours purement pour se distraire. Luis fait les honneurs de sa demeure à Julia et Miguel, notamment sa collection d'armes à feu et ses disques de Wagner. Luis leur présente Jaime, un homme d'une trentaine d'années, qui vit chez lui. Luis entretient visiblement une relation particulière avec Jaime, qui semble se comporter avec lui comme un serviteur avec son maître, sans se définir comme tel, et sans être non plus son ami. Après un repas succulent, Luis conduit les deux jeunes gens à une chambre à la décoration chargée où ils dormiront dans le même lit pour la première fois. Julia et Miguel font l'amour tandis que Luis et Jaime passent la soirée de leur côté.

Paco and Urko, two teenagers living in Bilbao, become best friends while attending the same Academy. They come from different backgrounds. Paco has two younger sisters; his mother, Eulalia, is a traditional housewife; while his father, Evaristo Torrecuadrada, is a Civil Guard Commander who hold right-wing views. Urko's parents are separated and he lives with his father, Martín Aramendia, a leftist politician affiliated with one of the groups pushing for Basque autonomy. Unbeknown to their families, Paco and Urko are drug addicts. They hang out with Betty, a young Argentinian prostitute, who sleeps with both of them. In order to have the means to support their drug addiction, Betty puts them in contact with El Cojo, a drug dealer living in Barakaldo with his pregnant wife Pilar, herself a heroine addict. El Cojo provides the two friends with drugs that they begin to sell. Paco also hags out in secret with Mikel Urbea, a homosexual sculptor, who tries to warn him against the danger of using heavy drugs. Although Paco is heterosexual, he had had sex with Mikel in the past.

Father Miguel is a conservative thirty six years old Catholic priest. In the changing Spain of 1966 Miguel’s religious community tries to implement the doctrines given by the Second Vatican Council and adapt to the new realities of the country. His sexuality is further aroused by Antonia, a beautiful married woman in her thirties, who in her confessions tells father Miguel about her intense sexual encounters with her husband.
