Synopsis
Licencié en droit et modeste employé d'une bibliothèque municipale, Rodolphe mène une vie simple, partagé entre son amour pour les auteurs sud-américains et sa passion inavouée pour sa collègue Agnès. Agust a quitté l'Islande pour suivre des études de gestion à Paris, mais il les a rapidement abandonnées pour se consacrer à sa passion : la musique. In Heaven, the last ten years have been tough—Hell has been winning the battle between Good and Evil. The managers of Heaven receive a request by a mother to save her son's soul and see the possibility of winning the soul of a boxer named Manny (Demián Bichir) as an opportunity to shift the balance of power. Although Manny is severely in debt and is even thinking of suicide, Lola (Victoria Abril), an angel, is sent to Earth to take over the role of the boxer's wife. To counter this, Hell's manager Jack Davenport (Gael García Bernal) decides to send one of his more troublesome agents, Carmen (Penélope Cruz), who was a male ex-gangster punished by being converted into a waitress, to fight back by impersonating Manny's cousin. Though it starts out as a simple fight between heaven and hell for the soul of one man, a conspiracy in Hell and conflicting emotions interrupt the war between saints and sinners. Manny is overprotective of Lola and after looking through the porn magazines that Carmen reads, he suspects a relationship between Lola and Carmen. Suddenly Manny's soul becomes increasingly important and his weakened physical state creates a deadline by which he must go to Hell or Heaven. It is the job of the supernatural agents to tempt or save Manny. The obstinate womanizing boxer inconsistently shows signs of regret and change, for example when he writes a letter of apology to his mother but doesn't send it. His ups and downs make it a hard job for both Carmen and Lola.

After a series of images of rushing water, forest, and dark, empty subterranean hallways, six-year-old Iris arrives in a coffin placed in the dormitory's common area, where she is met with curiosity by the other six girls of the house. After grooming and dressing her, they all exchange hair ribbons with each other - each girl gets the ribbons passed down from the girl a year above her. Iris, the new youngest "red ribbon", excites the ire of Selma, the former red ribbon, who complains about absence of the former violet-ribbon Natacha—the oldest who had been her friend. The new violet ribbon, Bianca, takes Iris under her wing. At first Iris is homesick, and believes that she will be reunited with her brother, but Bianca matter-of-factly tells her there is no possibility of that: there are no boys allowed. All of the girls in the school go swimming, and Iris quickly befriends Laura, the red-ribbon of another house. That night, much to Iris's dismay, Bianca leaves on an authorized mysterious errand that she cannot discuss. The next day, Iris has a routine day at the school - dance lessons, classroom time with animals, and recreation. The classes at the school are run by two young women: Mademoiselle Edith, who walks with a cane and teaches lessons, and Mademoiselle Eva, who teaches dance. Each house is cared for by an elderly serving woman; the girls whisper that all of the employees are girls who tried to escape the walled school in their youth, and were pressed into permanent service as punishment.
