Synopsis
En Amérique du Sud, Mora, un photographe, est témoin d'un meurtre commis en pleine rue. Son premier réflexe est de photographier toute la scène en cachette. Il retrouve un peu plus tard dans la nuit son ami Carrère, dont celui-ci tente de récupérer les prises, face au refus de Mora. Le lendemain, Christina lui apprend que Carrère a été arrêté et assassiné. En rentrent chez lui, il découvre Aline morte, la fille d'un de ses amis. Il apprend par ailleurs que sa propre vie est en jeu.Actors

Picking up two or three years after where the original left off, narcotics officer Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle (Gene Hackman) is still searching for elusive drug kingpin Alain Charnier (Fernando Rey). Orders from his superiors send Doyle to Marseilles, France, to track down the criminal mastermind and bust his drug ring. Once in France, Doyle is met by Inspector Henri Barthélémy (Bernard Fresson), who resents his rude and crude crimefighting demeanor. Doyle then begins to find himself as a fish out of water in France, where he is matched with a language he cannot understand. Doyle is shown round the police station where he finds his desk is situated directly outside the toilets. He tells Barthélémy that he is not satisfied with this positioning and hopes it is not a joke at his expense. Barthélémy informs Doyle that he has read his personnel file and is aware of his reputation and especially hopes he has not brought a gun with him as it is strictly forbidden in France for visiting police officers from other countries to carry firearms.

A disbarred lawyer (Giancarlo Giannini) is working as a debt collector for his partner Sapo (Philippe Léotard). In a little village, lost at the bottom of a valley in the midst of mountains and deprived of sun for long months, an old man Anzerul (Charles Vanel), prophet and magician, announces the end of the world. According to his calculations the sun will not return to the village and the village will descend into an endless winter. Helen Wells (Mimsy Farmer), une jeune Anglaise venue en Normandie pour louer une maison isolée en forêt, rencontre un groupe de chasseurs qui s'apprêtent à une battue au sanglier. Jadis cascadeur célèbre, Christopher Bergham a causé un accident où sa femme Bella, qui était sa partenaire dans ce numéro périlleux, a trouvé la mort . Trois ans plus tard, alors qu'il est toujours hanté par ce souvenir, c'est sous le nom de Berg qu'il est employé comme patrouilleur de nuit dans une société de police privée. Leandro le frère de Bella, qui était en fait à l'origine indirecte de l'accident, s'introduit dans la société "La Veillance", dont le patron La Rocca est peu regardant sur le passé de ses employés pourvu qu'ils soient capables d'affronter les événements violents des missions de nuit. Leandro comprenant que les rapports au sein du groupe de policiers sont tendus et fréquemment susceptibles de dégénérer, exploite un incident violent entre Berg et un de ses collègues : une nuit, Berg blesse Garcia qui était en train de violer Mimi, une employée de La Veillance. Leandro saisit l'occasion pour tuer Garcia et faire porter la responsabilité du meurtre à Berg. Bien que La Rocca tente de les exhorter au calme en décidant de confier l'affaire à la police, tous les patrouilleurs de nuit tombent d'accord pour prendre Berg en chasse afin de régler leur compte avec lui. Berg, pilote émérite, prend la fuite en compagnie de son coéquipier Nino et de Mimi. Après plusieurs étapes, le groupe trouve refuge à la fin de la nuit dans le Palais omnisports de Bercy, où entre échanges de coups de feu et divisions entre les poursuivants, Berg se trouve finalement amené à affronter Leandro seul à seul.
