Synopsis
A près de 80 ans, Jacobo Kaplan, juif polonais envoyé en Amérique latine par ses parents pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, est tiraillé par des questionnements existentiels. Jacob van Oppen, an East German who is the former strongest man on earth, and his manager Orsini, a scrawny yet dapper businessman who calls himself "the Prince," make a good living by travelling around small South American towns and organizing wrestling exhibitions in run-down theaters. Jacob van Oppen is an uncontrollable titan of impressive dimensions who can only be appeased by the soft soothing melody of "Lili Marleen." En 1973, à la suite d'un coup d'état, s'installe en Uruguay une dictature militaire qui s'empresse d'emprisonner les opposants politiques. Parmi eux, trois dirigeants des Tupamaros, José Mujica dit Pepe, Eleuterio Fernández Huidobro dit Ñato et Mauricio Rosencof que le pouvoir en place considère comme des otages qui seront exécutés à la moindre action de leurs quelques compagnons d'arme restés en liberté. Incarcérés sans procès pendant douze ans, les trois hommes sont torturés, privés de tout contact, ballotés de geôles sordides en culs de basse fosse, affamés et maintenu dans un état de crasse indescriptible. Malgré cela, les trois hommes résistent en repensant aux moments heureux de leur vie, en communiquant en frappant sur les murs ou en mettant en évidence l'absurdité du régime pénitentiaire. Ils font échouer ainsi le plan des militaires de les rendre fous faute de pouvoir les tuer.

Une tragi-comédie exquise et très rythmée, qui joue sur une multitude de registres : on y trouve à la fois le côté chronique adolescente du Péril jeune de Cédric Klapisch, le psychédélisme d'Emir Kusturica, le laconisme d'Aki Kaurismaki et les doutes d'Ingmar Bergman. L'occasion aussi de revoir la sublime Kati Outinen, qui interprète la mère de Niila.
