National Lampoon's Vacation, sometimes referred to as Vacation, is a 1983 American comedy film directed by Harold Ramis and starring Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, Randy Quaid, Dana Barron, and Anthony Michael Hall. John Candy, Imogene Coca, Christie Brinkley, and a young Jane Krakowski appear in supporting roles.

The screenplay was written by John Hughes, based on his short story "Vacation '58" which appeared in National Lampoon.

The film was a box-office hit, earning more than $60 million in the US with an estimated budget of $15 million, and received widespread acclaim from critics. In 2000, readers of Total Film voted it the 46th greatest comedy film of all time. It is widely regarded as the best National Lampoon film, and in August 2015 was listed as the best film in the Vacation film series by Daniel Cohen. It continues to be a cult film and a staple on cable television.

Synopsis

Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase), wanting to spend more time with his wife Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo) and children Rusty (Anthony Michael Hall) and Audrey (Dana Barron), decides to lead the family on a cross-country expedition from the Chicago area to the Los Angeles amusement park Walley World, billed as "America's Favorite Family Fun Park." Ellen wants to fly, but Clark insists on driving, so he can bond with his family. He has ordered a new car in preparation for the trip, but the dealer (Eugene Levy) claims that it will not be ready for six weeks. Clark is forced to accept a Wagon Queen Family Truckster, an ugly, out-sized station wagon, as the car he brought to trade in has already been hauled away and crushed.

The Griswold family competes in a game show called Pig in a Poke and wins an all-expenses-paid trip to Europe. In a whirlwind tour of western Europe, chaos of all sorts ensues. They stay in a fleabag London hotel with a sloppy, tattooed Cockney desk clerk (Mel Smith). While in their English rental car, a yellow Austin Maxi, Clark drives the family endlessly around the busy Lambeth Bridge Roundabout for hours, unable to maneuver his way out of traffic. His tendency to drive on the wrong side of the road causes frequent accidents, including accidentally knocking over a bicyclist (Eric Idle), who reappears throughout the film. At Stonehenge, Clark backs the car into an ancient stone monolith, toppling all the stones like dominoes, which they do not even notice as they happily leave the scene.

Rusty Griswold (Ed Helms) is now a disenchanted adult working as a pilot for Econo-Air, and he shares a very estranged relationship with his wife, Debbie (Christina Applegate), and their two sons, the shy and awkward older teenager, James (Skyler Gisondo), and the cruel and obnoxious younger kid, Kevin (Steele Stebbins). The gloating from his friends, Jack (Keegan-Michael Key) and Nancy Peterson (Regina Hall), about a family trip they had in Paris doesn't help his situation. He desires to relive the fun of his family vacations back when he was a kid (such as their trip to Vegas, Europe, Walley World, and even staying at home for the Christmas holiday). These memories prompt him to nix his family's annual trip to their cabin in Cheboygan, Michigan and instead drive cross country to Walley World, just as he had years before with his parents and sister, Audrey Griswold (Leslie Mann) (as seen in the original Vacation film).

In 2010, three friends are miserable with their lives: Adam Yates (John Cusack) has been dumped by yet another girlfriend, and his geeky 20-year-old nephew Jacob (Clark Duke) lives in his basement, playing Second Life, with no idea who his father is. Lou Dorchen (Rob Corddry) is a party animal way past his prime. Nick Webber-Agnew (Craig Robinson) has a dead-end job at a dog spa and an unfaithful and controlling wife named Courtney (Kellee Stewart). Lou almost dies from carbon monoxide poisoning in what his friends think is a suicide attempt. Adam and Nick sympathetically take him and Jacob to the site of some of their most memorable weekends, the Kodiak Valley Ski Resort. Upon arrival at the resort, they see that Kodiak Valley has fallen on hard times as well. They are shown to their room by a hostile one-armed bellhop named Phil Wedmaier (Crispin Glover). During a night of heavy drinking in a hot tub, they spill a can of an illegal Russian energy drink called "Chernobly" on the hot tub's controls. The next day, they wake up in 1986. They see each other as their normal age, but in their reflections and to other people, they appear as they did in 1986, except Jacob, who was not yet born. They arrive during "Winterfest '86," the weekend when Poison played to a huge crowd at the then-thriving Kodiak Resort.
