Synopsis
L'écrivain Max Zorn se rend à New York où vit sa compagne Clara pour promouvoir son dernier roman qui raconte la passion amoureuse qu'il a eue autrefois dans cette ville avec une autre femme, Rebecca, originaire de l'Allemagne de l'Est. Max fait tout pour revoir Rebecca. Elle, devenue une riche avocate, se montre d'abord réticente. Elle consent finalement à passer du temps avec lui. Rebecca invite Max à venir avec elle un après-midi à Montauk, petit village tout au bout de Long Island dans lequel ils avaient séjourné vingt ans auparavant. L'histoire prend une tout autre tournure lorsqu'ils s'y retrouvent pour le week-end.Actors

As the Allied Forces move toward Paris, Adolf Hitler commands Gen Dietrich von Choltitz to destroy the city. Choltitz sends a team to demolish the city's famous land-marks and to overflow the Seine, led by Lt Hegger and advised by a captured Parisian engineer named Mr Lanvin. In April 1957, engineer Walter Faber (Sam Shepard) is waiting to board a flight from Caracas, Venezuela to New York City when he meets a German, Herbert Hencke (Dieter Kirchlechner), who reminds him of an old friend. Before takeoff, Walter decides not to board the airplane, but when a flight attendant discovers him still in the terminal, she escorts him aboard. During the flight, the airplane develops engine trouble and crash lands in the desert near the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains.

In the near future war rages across the fictional Republic of Gilead and pollution has rendered 99% of the population sterile. Kate is a woman attempting to emigrate to Canada with her husband and daughter. While attempting to take a dirt road, they are caught by the Gilead Border Guard, who orders them to turn back or they will open fire. Kate's husband uses an automatic rifle to draw the fire, telling Kate to run, but he gets shot, Kate gets captured, whilst their daughter wanders off into the backcountry confused and unaccompanied. The authorities take Kate to a training facility with several other women, where they are all trained to become a Handmaid, a concubine for one of the privileged but barren couples who rule the country's religious fundamentalist regime. Although she resists being indoctrinated into the cult of the Handmaids, mixing Old Testament orthodoxy and misogyny with 12-step gospel and ritualized violence, Kate is soon assigned to the home of the Commander and his cold, inflexible wife, Serena Joy. There she is renamed "Offred" - "of Fred".

Swann (Jeremy Irons), an eligible bachelor in the best circles of fin-de-siècle Paris, has also some more vulgar but rich friends, the Verdurins. Through them he meets Odette (Ornella Muti), a courtesan, with whom he falls hopelessly in love. She seems to enjoy his company, for which he pays, but considers herself free to socialise and sleep where she pleases, particularly with a rival called de Forcheville. In 1919 Latvia, a detachment of German Freikorps soldiers is stationed in a chateau in the town of Kratovice to fight Bolshevik guerrillas. The chateau is the home of the soldier Konrad de Reval and his sister Sophie de Reval. Sophie is attracted to another soldier, a close friend of Konrad's named Erich von Lhomond. However, the reticent Erich rebuffs her advances. In retaliation, Sophie has trysts with other members of the military troop. Erich is noticeably angered by her behavior. Eventually, Sophie learns that Erich and Konrad are lovers. After this discovery, she joins the leftist guerrillas, whom she had been in contact with previously. Erich's soldiers capture her and her comrades. Sophie asks that Erich execute her himself, and he obliges. In a striking single tracking shot, we see Erich casually shoot Sophie in the head before joining in a photo with the other soldiers. As all board a train, the camera pans back to the corpses of the executed.

À la suite d'une rixe, Charlie, un noir, s'enfuit poursuivi par Beau Boutan, un fermier blanc, qui armé d'un fusil veut « lui faire la peau ». Après avoir tenté de lui échapper à travers les plantations de canne à sucre de la famille Marshall, Charlie se réfugie chez Mathu, un fermier noir. Un coup de feu claque et le poursuivant est abattu devant la porte de la masure où le poursuivi s'est précipité. Candy qui habite dans la riche demeure de son oncle Jack Marshall et de sa tante Bea Marshall depuis qu'elle a perdu ses parents, entend le coup de feu et se rend immédiatement sur place pour en comprendre l'origine. Elle arrive chez Mathu qui prostré ne répond pas à ses questions mais elle n'a aucun mal à comprendre ce qui s'est passé. Très attachée à ce fermier qui, pendant son enfance, a été un substitut paternel elle organise sa protection pour éviter à son ami d'être lynché par la famille Boutan et leurs complices ou amis blancs. Avec l'aide de Miss Merle qui, pour elle, a joué le rôle de substitut maternel et celle de Snookum, un gamin déluré, elle rassemble 18 noirs qui, armés de fusils viennent faire bloc à ses côtés.
