Synopsis
Harold Fallen (Burt Lancaster) a sleazy tabloid publisher in Scandal Sheet . Interested only in selling papers, Fallen sees an easy target in a recovering alcoholic actor Ben Rowan (Robert Urich) trying to make a comeback. Reporter Helen Grant (Pamela Reed) is in serious economic trouble, and Fallen hires her to dig up dirt on the actor due to her close friendship with his wife (Lauren Hutton). Helen must now choose between her friendship and journalistic integrity on one hand and her desperation and Harold Fallen persuasive ways on the other.Actors

The film opens with a mysterious person chasing a student, Martha Sayers (Terry Lumley). The same day, the police and her sister Elizabeth (Pamela Franklin) find her hanged in her room. The police rule her death as an unmotivated suicide, but Elizabeth refuses to believe this and investigates further. She decides to visit the exclusive academy that Martha attended, The Salem Academy for Women, despite warnings from Martha's roommate, Lucy Dembrow (Gwynne Gilford). The movie revolves around real-life Lithuanian seaman Simas Kudirka, a radio operator on a Soviet fish processing vessel. When his ship meets at sea with a U.S. Coast Guard cutter near Martha's Vineyard in early 1970, Kudirka makes a dramatic leap from the deck, landing on the USCGC Vigilant. He announces that he wishes to defect, but confusion over U.S. policy on defections prevents the Americans from offering him asylum. As the crew of the Vigilant looks on helplessly, Soviet officers are allowed to board the cutter, beat and bind Kudirka, and drag him back to his own ship. This tinderbox political incident occurs during a Soviet/U.S. conference over fishing rights. The ultimate fate of Simas Kudirka provides the core of the script.

Sam Alden is the 17-year-old high school star player in baseball who seems to have it all. However, his family notices that he is often bothered with fits of coughing.
