Synopsis
Buenos Aires, un matin. L'avocat Sebastian, en instance de divorce, passe prendre ses deux enfants chez leur mère Delia, au septième étage d'un immeuble bourgeois, pour les emmener à l'école. Il doit rejoindre ensuite le tribunal où son cabinet défend un de ses plus gros clients, accusé de trafic de viande. Les enfants descendent à pied pendant que Sebastian prend l'ascenseur, un peu capricieux. Quand il arrive en bas, les enfants ne sont toujours pas là et Miguel, le gardien, ne les a pas vus. le père croit d'abord à un jeu, parcourt les escaliers, mais doit se rendre à l'évidence : ses enfants ont disparu. Sous pression pour se rendre au tribunal il s'adresse à tous les voisins, y compris Rosales, un commissaire de police proche de la retraite qui prend la recherche en main et alerte les forces de l'ordre. Sebastian, déstabilisé, accusé par sa femme d'avoir monté le coup pour garder ses enfants, soupçonne tout le monde : ses rivaux, le gardien, une voisine, son beau-frère, Rosales... Il reçoit enfin un appel exigeant une rançon de 100.000 dollars américains, à remettre dans les deux heures au dernier étage d'un parking des docks. Il se rend alors chez son employeur, dont il connaît les arrangements, et le force brutalement à lui remettre la somme.Actors

The film opens at a convenience store early in the morning. Juan, a con artist, successfully scams the cashier, but later messes up by attempting the same scam again on the next shift. Marcos, who has been observing the whole time, steps in pretending to be a police officer and takes Juan away. As soon as they are far enough from the shop, Marcos tells Juan he is not actually a cop but a fellow con man. Juan asks Marcos to show him the ropes, because his father, also a con man, is in jail and he needs to raise money quickly to bribe a judge to reduce his father's sentence from 10 years to 6 months.

In 1975 Spain, a young girl named Laura is given up for adoption. Years later, adult Laura (Rueda) returns to the closed orphanage, accompanied by her husband, Carlos (Cayo), and their seven-year-old adopted son, Simón (Príncep). She plans to reopen the orphanage as a facility for disabled children. Simón claims to see a boy named Tomás (Óscar Casas). He befriends Tomás and draws pictures of him as a child wearing a sack mask. Social worker Benigna Escobedo (Montserrat Carulla) informs Laura that Simón's adoption file indicates that Simón is HIV positive. Incensed at Benigna's intrusion, Laura asks her to leave. She later finds Benigna in the orphanage's coal shed, but Benigna flees the scene. Later, Simón teaches Laura a game which grants its winner a wish. Clues lead the two to Simón's adoption file. Simón becomes angry, and says that his new friend told him that Laura is not his biological mother and that he is going to die soon.
