The movie tells the stories of five pairs of lovers, each from a different period of their lives. All five couples, though different in age and circumstance, are somehow linked to one another. Small-timer Fei (Louis Koo), his married buddy Sam (Simon Yam), and antique store owner Mok (Sun Hong Lei) are all in desperate need of money. After the Japanese surrender following World War II, the People's Liberation Army must retake areas overrun by bandits who have raided the Japanese arsenals. Shao Jianbo, known by his codename Captain 203 after his unit, commands a group of 30 men. They are out of food and low on ammunition. One of their problems is resolved when they defeat a group of bandits dressed as the PLA who are guarding stores of ammunition. Reinforcements arrive via train in the form of Yang Zirong and Bai Ru, a combat medic, who are warmly greeted when they bring food. Captain 203 leads his men to the village raided by the bandits. Along the way, they meet a young boy who lost his family to bandit attacks. Though he initially distrusts the PLA soldiers, he warms to them after they rescue him from a bandit spy in the village.

Lam Wai Tung has cancer. In order to raise money for his younger brother Wai Leung to study medicine overseas, he robs some diamond for smuggler Chiu Ying Kau. After the robbery, he hides the real diamonds himself and gives fake diamonds to Chiu, which he then finds out and kills Tung. In order to recover the diamonds, Chiu sets a scheme and makes Leung a murder suspect and arranges his Japanese female subordinate Miko to save him and hide him and nurse his gunshot wounds. Under Miko's attentive treatment, Leung heals and they establish a profound friendship.

The entire film happens in a very desolate region of China, in the northwestern deserts. A poacher is being arrested by a police officer after capturing a rare falcon, worth 1 million RMB on the black market. A second poacher kills the police officer with his jeep and tells the first poacher to flee, while he stays behind himself to take responsibility. He hires one of the best lawyers in China for his defense, forcing the lawyer to travel a long distance to get to the town. At the trial, the lawyer gets the poacher acquitted by arguing that the crash happened because the police officer was drunk. The lawyer takes the poacher's car as collateral and begins a long drive back to China's eastern region. While driving, the lawyer is harassed by two people in a truck carrying hay. He throws his lighter at the hay in retaliation, igniting it, and drives ahead.
