Synopsis
Dublin, en 1985, Conor Lawlor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo ), un jeune lycéen de 15 ans, est contraint de changer de lycée car ses parents, touchés par la crise économique, n'ont plus d'argent pour payer ses études. Dans ce nouvel établissement, il subit l'ambiance désastreuse du lycée religieux « Synge Street ». Inspiré par les groupes mythiques de l'époque tels que The Cure, Duran Duran ou encore A-ha, le jeune garçon forme un groupe de musique avec l'aide de ses nouveaux camarades et de son grand frère Brendan (Jack Reynor), pour séduire la belle et mystérieuse mannequin Raphina (Lucy Boynton).Actors

Dan Mulligann (Mark Ruffalo) is a formerly successful record label executive living in New York City who is estranged from his wife Miriam and struggling to keep up with the changing music industry. After being fired from his job, he goes on a drinking binge which leads him to a bar in the Lower East Side where he encounters Gretta James (Keira Knightley). Gretta is a young and fiercely independent songwriter who has just broken up with her long-time boyfriend and songwriting partner Dave Kohl (Adam Levine), a newly successful musician who had an affair with one of his producers' assistants. A thirty-something Dublin busker ("Guy", played by Glen Hansard) sings and plays guitar on Grafton Street, a Dublin shopping district. He struggles with the trials of performing on the street. Lured by his music, an unnamed young Czech immigrant flower seller ("Girl", played by Markéta Irglová) talks to him about his songs. Georgia Nicholson is a 14-year-old school girl who has many stresses in her life. Berke Landers (Ben Foster) and his girlfriend Allison (Melissa Sagemiller) were the quintessential high-school couple who grew up together and eventually fell in love, but she breaks up with him immediately after the film begins. This leads to an opening musical number of "Love Will Keep Us Together" by Vitamin C, imagined by Berke. He seeks advice from his embarrassing parents Frank (Ed Begley Jr.) and Beverly Landers (Swoosie Kurtz), who are hosts of a relationship advice show called Love Matters, but they don't help with the situation and constantly focus on his sex life and sexuality throughout the film. Allison then starts a relationship with Striker (Shane West), a 'foreign' student who was once the lead singer of a boy band called "The Swingtown Lads". When Allison and Striker audition for the school's upcoming musical, Berke desperately tries to win Allison back by also auditioning for the play, despite having no theatrical talent and having a busy schedule as a member of the basketball team. Meanwhile, Berke's friends Felix (Colin Hanks) and Dennis (Sisqó) try to find a new girlfriend for him.

Ali Rose (Aguilera) moves to Los Angeles after she quits her bar job when her boss refuses to pay her.
