Synopsis
À Montevideo, les rebelles d'extrême gauche du Mouvement de libération nationale (Tupamaros) enlèvent Philippe Michael Santore, officiellement fonctionnaire de l'Agence pour le développement international (AID). Alors qu'il se décrit comme un conseiller technique, expert en communication et gestion de la circulation, ses geôliers lui exposent les preuves qu'ils ont recueillies et qui démontrent qu'il agit au nom du gouvernement des États-Unis en tant que conseiller pour la répression et la torture auprès des forces de sécurité de l'Uruguay. L'incapacité de la police et de l'armée à le retrouver menace alors de dégénérer en crise politique.Actors

Six people travel by train overnight from Marseilles to Paris. When the train arrives at its destination, one of the passengers, a girl, is found dead in a sleeping berth. The police led by Inspector Grazzi investigate the other five passengers, suspecting that one of them was responsible. The film is about Artur Ludvik, alias Gerard, vice-minister of Foreign Affairs of Czechoslovakia. He realizes he is being watched and followed. One day, he is arrested and put into jail by an organisation that declares itself "above the ruling party" and put in solitary confinement for months without being told the reason why. Through brainwashing techniques, including sleep deprivation and being forced to walk back and forth all the time, he is slowly pressured into confessing imaginary crimes, including treason, and to repeat this confession in a public court. Years later, he meets his now demoted tormentor, who tries to downplay his role at that time.

In France during the German occupation, a young German naval officer is killed in Paris by a group of leftist activists. The compliant Vichy government seeks to appease the Germans by locating the perpetrators and agreeing to the execution of six people, and a special section is set up for this purpose. The section consists of judges who are too ambitious, cowardly or inhuman to refuse such work. The flames of totalitarianism must be stoked, even with innocent blood, and it is especially convenient to the government if the accused are thoroughly expendable in their eyes.
