Pictures. The film's voice cast includes Ryunosuke Kamiki, Nanami Sakuraba, Mitsuki Tanimura, Sumiko Fuji and Ayumu Saitō. The film tells the story of Kenji Koiso, a timid eleventh-grade math genius who is taken to Ueda by twelfth-grade student Natsuki Shinohara to celebrate her great-grandmother's 90th birthday. However, he is falsely implicated in the hacking of a virtual world by a sadistic artificial intelligence named Love Machine. Kenji must repair the damage done to it and find a way to stop the rogue computer program from causing any further damage.
After producing The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Madhouse was asked to produce something new. Hosoda and writer Satoko Okudera conceived a story about a social network and a stranger's connection with a family. The real-life city of Ueda was chosen as the setting for Summer Wars, as part of the territory was once governed by the Sanada clan and was close to Hosoda's birthplace in Toyama. Hosoda used the clan as the basis for the Jinnouchi family after visiting his then-fiancé's home in Ueda.
Production of Summer Wars commenced in 2006. Art director Youji Takeshige incorporated Japanese houses into his background designs. Hosoda also insisted that 80 family members were to be included as main characters. The project was first announced at the 2008 Tokyo International Anime Fair and the first trailer of the film was released in April 2009. Audience interest was fueled primarily through word of mouth and Internet publicity. A manga adaptation of the film was written by Iqura Sugimoto and began its serialization in July 2009.
Summer Wars premiered in Japan on August 1, 2009. It grossed over US$1 million in its opening weekend in 127 theaters and ranked No. 7 at the box office. The film was well received by critics and the general audience and was financially successful, earning $18 million worldwide. It won several awards such as the 2010 Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year, the 2010 Japan Media Arts Festival's Animation Division Grand Prize, the Anaheim International Film Festival's Audience Award for Best Animated Feature and was nominated for the 2009 Golden Leopard award at the Locarno International Film Festival.

Sophie, an eighteen-year-old hatter, is a responsible young woman who encounters a mysterious and powerful wizard named Howl on her way to visit her younger sister Lettie. The Witch of the Waste, who romantically pursues Howl, visits the hat shop only and insults Sophie, being refused service by her as a result. The Witch exacts revenge by cursing Sophie, transforming her into a ninety-year-old woman. Seeking a cure for the spell, Sophie travels into the Wastes and encounters a living scarecrow whom she names "Turnip Head," who leads her to Howl's castle. There, she meets Howl's young apprentice, Markl, and the fire-demon Calcifer, who is the source of the castle's energy and magic. Calcifer offers to break the witch's curse in exchange for Sophie's help in breaking the spell he's under, which keeps him bound to the house. Un soir, au Highton View Terrace, à Tokyo, un œuf constitué de données virtuelles émane de l'écran d'ordinateur de deux jeunes enfants : Taichi et sa petite sœur Hikari. Peu après, l'œuf éclot et une étrange créature en sort. Le monstre évolue progressivement, devenant de plus en plus gros et puissant (il finit par devenir une sorte de dinosaure jaune), ce qui ne manque pas de poser problème lorsqu'il décide de parcourir la ville avec la petite Hikari sur son dos. Taichi se lance à leur poursuite, constatant les dégâts que la créature a provoqués. C'est alors que dans le ciel, un second œuf, cette fois gigantesque, apparaît et une autre créature, ressemblant à une sorte d'aigle — Parrotmon — surgit alors. Les deux monstres se lancent dans un féroce combat au cours duquel le dinosaure se transforme une nouvelle fois en une créature encore plus impressionnante, Greymon. Taichi et Hikari, ainsi que plusieurs autres enfants, assistent à la lutte. Grâce aux encouragements des deux enfants, l'ennemi est terrassé dans une immense explosion.

Durant les vacances d'été, un digimon de type virus fait son apparition sur Internet, ce qui ne manque pas d'inquiéter Koushiro (Izzy dans la version française) qui file alors chez Taichi (Tai) pour lui faire partager sa découverte. Usant de l'ordinateur du père de Taichi et avec l'aide de Gennai, les deux enfants envoie leur partenaires digimon respectifs, Agumon et Tentomon, pour attaquer le nouvel ennemi, qui s'avère être le digimon Keramon. Toutefois, ce dernier se transforme en Infermon qui bat alors les deux monstres. Taichi tente d'appeler des renforts mais Infermon commence à corrompre tout le réseau et la communication devient très compliqué. Il parvient toutefois à contacter Yamato (Matt) et Takeru (T.K.) et très vite, WarGreymon et MetalGarurumon sont envoyés à l'attaque. Infermon se transforme alors à nouveau et devient Diablomon (Diaboromon en version française). À cause d'un geste maladroit de Taichi, la connexion internet est coupée et WarGreymon est alors à la merci du monstre qui s'enfuit une fois le combat terminé. Les enfants apprennent alors que Diablomon a piraté le Pentagone pour envoyer un missile nucléaire qui explosera dans les dix minutes sur une destination inconnue. Le seul espoir d'empêcher cela est de détruire Diablomon.
