Add to a movie listThe Cat and the Canary (1927) is an American silent horror film adaptation of John Willard's 1922 black comedy play of the same name. Directed by German Expressionist filmmaker Paul Leni, the film stars Laura La Plante as Annabelle West, Forrest Stanley as Charles "Charlie" Wilder, and Creighton Hale as Paul Jones. The plot revolves around the death of Cyrus West, who is Annabelle, Charlie, and Paul's uncle, and the reading of his will 20 years later. Annabelle inherits her uncle's fortune, but when she and her family spend the night in his haunted mansion they are stalked by a mysterious figure. Meanwhile, a lunatic known as "the Cat" escapes from an asylum and hides in the mansion.
The film is part of a genre of comedy horror films inspired by 1920s Broadway stage plays. Paul Leni's adaptation of Willard's play blended expressionism with humor, a style Leni was notable for and critics recognized as unique. Leni's style of directing made The Cat and the Canary influential in the "old dark house" genre of films popular from the 1930s through the 1950s. The film was one of Universal's early horror productions and is considered "the cornerstone of Universal's school of horror." The play has been filmed five other times, with the most notable in 1939 starring comedic actor Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard.
Synopsis
In a decaying mansion overlooking the Hudson River, millionaire Cyrus West approaches death. His greedy family descends upon him like "cats around a canary", causing him to become insane. West orders that his last will and testament remain locked in a safe and go unread until the 20th anniversary of his death. As the appointed time arrives, West's lawyer, Roger Crosby (Tully Marshall), discovers that a second will mysteriously appeared in the safe. The second will may only be opened if the terms of the first will are not fulfilled. The caretaker of the West mansion, Mammy Pleasant (Martha Mattox), blames the manifestation of the second will on the ghost of Cyrus West, a notion that the astonished Crosby quickly rejects.Actors

On a dark and stormy night, Mickey Mouse takes shelter in a house that he is passing and soon discovers that it is haunted. After Mickey enters the house, the door locks itself, before Mickey is startled by a large spider and several bats, while hiding. Mickey then hears the sound of ghosts and flees into a hallway before the lights go out. As Mickey shouts 'Mammy!' three times in the dark, just like Al Jolson, he lights a match and looks around. Eventually a cloaked figure, which Mickey's shadow turns into scares Mickey, who screams, and flees in terror, with the shadow roaring at him. The cloaked figure corners Mickey into a room and compels him to play an organ while he and several other skeletons dance along to the music. When the music stops, Mickey tries to run away and leave the house, but finds several dead ends. He finally falls out of a window and into a full rain barrel and runs away.

Le ménage du professeur Jozef Stock et de sa femme Mizzie bat de l'aile. Stock souffre du peu d'attention de son épouse pour lui. Celle-ci, de son côté, entreprend de séduire le docteur Franz Braun, mari d'une amie de jeunesse, Charlotte. Franz et Charlotte forment un couple aimant mais ce dernier se défend mal des avances de Mizzie. Sa courtoisie et sa maladresse l'entraînent dans des situations compromettantes. Son collègue Gustav s'en aperçoit et cherche à tirer profit de la situation pour se rapprocher de Charlotte, à qui il ne cache pas son admiration. Quant au professeur Stock, il se réjouit de la possible infidélité de Mizzie qui pourrait lui donner un motif de divorce. Il s'empresse d'ailleurs d'engager un détective pour recueillir les preuves d'une liaison. Charlotte, enfin, ne se doute de rien mais s'étonne toutefois de l'intérêt que son mari semble accorder à une autre femme, Pauline Hofer, et demande à Mizzie de le surveiller. Les mensonges et chantages de Mizzie, les imprudences de Franz, et plusieurs quiproquos font craindre une rupture du couple jusque-là uni.
