Synopsis
In a British Army "glasshouse" (military detention camp) in the Libyan Desert, prisoners convicted of service offences such as insubordination, being drunk whilst on duty, going AWOL or petty theft etc. are subjected to repetitive drill in the blazing desert heat.Actors

In contemporary London, Charles Dobbs (James Mason) is a staid MI5 operative investigating Foreign Office official Samuel Fennan, a former Communist who apparently commits suicide. Dobbs becomes suspicious when a wake-up call is made to Fennan's home the next morning. While his widow Elsa (Simone Signoret) says it was for her, this is discovered to be a lie. Dobbs then suspects that Elsa, a survivor of an extermination camp, might have some clues, but other officials want Dobbs to drop the case. Dobbs privately links up with retired police inspector Mendel (Harry Andrews) to continue inquiries.

The film begins with VIPs visiting the headquarters of the Strategic Air Command (SAC) at Offutt AFB in Omaha, Nebraska. During the trip, an alert is initiated by USAF's early warning radar that an unidentified flying object is making an unauthorized intrusion into American airspace. Defense protocols dictate that the SAC must always keep several bomber groups airborne 24 hours a day in the event of a nuclear attack on the United States. Following the alert, bombers are ordered to proceed to predetermined aerial "fail-safe points" to await their final "go" orders before proceeding towards Soviet targets.

In Tennessee, Myrtle Kane (Lynn Redgrave) and Jeb Thorington (James Coburn) arrive on The Rube Benedict Show where the eponymous host (Reggie King) selects them and another couple as contestants. Despite not knowing each other, the couple wins the competition, and decides to earn $3,500 on one condition to have their marriage ordained by a minister on set. Using the check to restore Waverley Plantation, the couple arrives to New Orleans where Jeb introduces her wife to the decaying plantation mansion his family has owned since 1840. Sometime later, Jeb introduces Myrtle to his multiracial half-brother Chicken – on his father's side – who earned his name for hoarding chickens to the rooftop during their childhood. Myrtle eventually shares her background in show business as the last surviving member of an Alabama female quintet named the Mobile Hot-Shots.

He saw his two children die (one while riding in a cattle car) and his wife raped by Nazi officers in the camp. Famed playwright Sidney Bruhl (Caine) debuts the latest in a series of Broadway flops and returns to his opulent Long Island home and his wife, Myra (Cannon). Although their financial situation is not dire, Sidney is hungry for a hit. He has received a manuscript of a play called Deathtrap written by one of his students, Clifford Anderson, that he considers near perfection. À New York, du côté de Brooklyn, les membres d'une pauvre famille d'immigrés italiens se déchirent à cause de la relation amoureuse entre Rodolfo, jeune cousin clandestin fraîchement débarqué, et Catherine, nièce du patriarche Eddie Carbone, un docker des quais de Brooklyn. Ce dernier l'a élevé comme sa fille et la protège peut-être plus que de raison. Pour l'empêcher d'épouser Rodolfo, Eddie dénonce celui-ci aux services de l'immigration ; Marco (le frère de Rodolfo, lui aussi immigré, hébergé et dénoncé par Eddie) désire se venger. Eddie, s'estimant blessé dans son honneur (Marco l'a en effet insulté et lui a craché au visage aux yeux de la communauté), souhaite également en découdre avec ce dernier. Les deux s'affrontent dans un combat final, lors duquel Eddie perd tragiquement la vie.
