Synopsis
Alice (Vanessa Paradis) leaves prison after having served an eight month sentence for car theft. Her mother, who has just died, leaves her a cassette on which she admits to the mystery of her birth. Alice has never known her father. Twenty years before, her mother had loved two men (Belmondo, Delon). One of them is, unknowingly, her father. Alice goes off to find the two, but before discovering which is her father she gets them involved in an adventure.Actors

The plot centres around knifethrower Gabor (Auteuil) and a girl called Adèle (Paradis), who intends to kill herself by jumping from a bridge. Gabor intervenes to prevent the suicide and persuades Adèle to become the target girl in his knifethrowing act. The film then follows their relationship as they travel around Europe with the act. Their companionship and teamwork mean great luck for both of them. Then they get separated and their lives once again become luckless. The film ends on a bridge in Istanbul, this time with her saving him from suicide.

Milan (Hallyday) arrives in a small town by train at the start of the week. The hotel is closed, but he finds accommodation via a chance meeting with a retired French teacher, Manesquier (Rochefort). The film tells the story of the developing relationship between these apparent opposites, though looming in the background are two unavoidable events that each is expecting to take place on the Saturday - Manesquier is to undergo a major operation, and Milan (though he keeps this secret at first) is to lead a bank robbery. Manesquier soon realises Milan's intentions, but this does not prevent a growing mutual respect, with each envying the other's lifestyle.

Alors qu'il lui reste un an de détention à tirer, Stéphane Carella, casseur notoire, doit être transféré dans une autre prison dans un fourgon de gendarmerie dont le trajet passe dans les gorges du Verdon. Mais les gendarmes viennent en aide à des collègues, dont le véhicule vient d'avoir un léger accident, les obligeant à menotter Carella avec un certain Paul Brandon, individu apparemment violent et dangereux. C'est alors que Brandon neutralise un gendarme et s'évade en compagnie de Carella, avec lequel il est toujours menotté. Après avoir escaladé des falaises et plongé dans un torrent pour échapper à leurs poursuivants, les deux hommes réussissent à échapper aux policiers et trouvent refuge dans une maison isolée où vit Laura. La jeune femme, employée dans un parc d'attractions, les aide volontiers, car son mari a été tué un an auparavant par les forces de l'ordre. Cette dernière tombe sous le charme des deux hommes.

The villages of Charmoussey and Super-Charmoussey (Upper Charmoussey) have been longtime rivals despite the fact that many of their inhabitants are related to each other. While Charmoussey is relatively poor, Upper-Charmoussey enjoys the luxuries of a ski resort and thus a better economy than its sister village. The rivalry is also stressed because of the local beauty pageant, where the better trained and dressed girls of Upper-Charmoussey always win the contest. Since the size of both municipalities is very small, the local government has decided to merge Charmoussey into Upper-Charmoussey, this leaves the inhabitants of Charmoussey desperate because it is their last chance to win the beauty contest. In order to achieve that, they call the only person who has had any success outside the village, Franck (Benoît Poelvoorde) a second rate actor, who has been engaged mostly as an extra in many films (playing dead people) and is currently down on his luck after causing an accident that resulted in breaking the leg of actress Catherine Deneuve (his biggest role so far).

Le film est entièrement subjectif, sans scénario préétabli, il juxtapose une suite de séquences impressionnistes tournées au hasard des rencontres au Cambodge. Sans dialogue, le film baigne dans une musique envoûtante qui est la charpente du film. C'est cette suite musicale qu'avait découverte Patrice Leconte l'année précédente qui lui a inspiré le film. Fresque humaniste et sensible, il donne à voir la beauté du Cambodge et de ses habitants, sans juger, sans expliquer.
