Synopsis

À Paris, durant la guerre d'Algérie, Marcel Spadice, écrivain marginal et homosexuel notoire, remarque Franz-Ali, un jeune valet de cirque d'origine algérienne. Marcel demande à Hélène, une amie dévouée qui l'aime sans retour, d'arranger leur rencontre. L'occasion s'offre à elle en obtenant la libération de Franz-Ali qui a été emprisonné à la suite d'une rafle. Les deux hommes nouent une relation amoureuse et Marcel entreprend de réaliser le rêve de Franz-Ali : devenir un grand funambule. Marcel lui impose un apprentissage rude et sans relâche jusqu'à épuisement. Tandis que Marcel abandonne Franz-Ali pour jeter son dévolu sur Fredy, un petit voleur, Franz-Ali, amoureux transi, se réfugie dans les bras d'Hélène en espérant un retour d'affection de son mentor. En vain. Inconsolable, Franz-Ali, suivi par Hélène, retourne auprès de sa mère dans le bidonville où il a grandi. Désespéré, il entraîne sa mère et Hélène dans la mort en incendiant la baraque familiale.

The plot revolves around Bernard – a schoolfriend of Olivier's who is preparing for his bac – discovering he is a bastard and taking this as a welcome pretext for running away from home. Born into a wealthy family of French vintners, Max (Michel Piccoli) is a loner who devoted himself entirely to his obsession: the arrest of criminals. A former judge he is a police inspector and he sees a new band of burglars escape. This failure is still fresh in his mind when he meets Abel who has become a scrap thief and plunders construction sites with a small band of hoodlums around Nanterre. Max plans to encourage them to commit something big and catch them on the spot. Posing as a client, he meets Lily (Romy Schneider), a young German-born prostitute who is the companion of Abel. He pretends to be the director of a small bank branch which receives significant amounts of money at regular intervals. He ensures the support of his police commissioner. Max fails however to reveal his role as instigator. Gradually, some feeling arises between Max and Lily. But Max keeps a reserved attitude and merely influences the scrap through her. Finally, guessing the band ready for action, he communicates an ideal date to commit robbery. On the scheduled day, the police await them and they are arrested. Later in the police station, Rosinsky (the top cop in the bank's district) reveals to Max that he wants all collaborators brought to justice, including Lily. Distraught, Max tries to save her and ends up threatening Rosinsky. In an argument, Max pulls out his gun and kills him.

The film follows the friends of a recently deceased minor painter Jean-Baptiste Emmerich as they take a train from Paris to Limoges, where he is to be buried, attend his funeral, then gather at the home of his twin brother, Lucien.
