The doctor Guido Tersilli, with numerous cheating, has become the primary of a major clinic in Rome called Villa Celeste. Now he is no longer the simple surgeon of any hospital, but is a doctor by profession, which is enhanced by providing input to his clinic to very rich people of Rome. The previous clients borrowed for him now are not worth anything, especially the poors who can not afford, even if they're sick, stay in the clinic. Begins the controversy and so Guido Tersilli, not to get him in trouble, decides to hire a renowned surgeon at his clinic, so that it will convince other wealthy clients to enter in the clinic Villa Celeste for treatment.
Rome, 1800. Rugantino is a fool in love that rages eternal, though he is very unlucky in love stories and fruitful occasions. In fact he is denounced for trying to rob the elderly uncle of inheritance, apparently believed in the end of life, then Rugantino is beaten and sentenced to public torture of a squire. In fact Rugantino is in love with his young wife Rosetta, and this is the main character more than once, after having served the sentence, persecuted by justice and by the criminals. Rosetta however seems to love Rugantino, given his innocence and his ineptitude, but the young man, when he is accused of murder of an important lord of Rome, is sentenced to death. His fate is sealed, and after spending a few weeks in jail, Rugantino is beheaded.
The Milanese lawyer Mario Marani (Tognazzi), due to fog at the airport, is forced to return home because his flight was canceled. At home he finds his wife Francesca half asleep and realizes that a person is hiding in the closet of shotguns.
The Sicilian worker Saverio Ravizzi (Buzzanca), just hired in a factory in Bergamo, begins to mobilize his fellow workers in better working conditions, unaware that his spontaneous activism is actually used as part of a larger financial plan by the owner of the factory.
Oscar (Ugo Tognazzi) is a driver whom to stay in the good graces of his master, a well-known businessman known as the "Lawyer" (Gastone Moschin), assumes the responsibility of a serious car accident, with 15 deaths, caused by the "Lawyer".
Davide, ex-séminariste devenu photographe, et Viviane, bourgeoise libérée et femme d’un acteur un peu illuminé, se rencontrent et s'aiment. Spécialisé dans les photos de postérieurs, tout sexe confondu, Davide s’immisce dans le foyer anticonformiste de Vivianne et fait bientôt la connaissance de l'employée de maison, la belle Tonina.
L'action du film se déroule en Sicile.
Vito La Casella ne manque jamais une occasion de prouver sa virilité aux villageois. Il est marié à la jeune Cettina.
Quatre jeunes filles sont très unies depuis l'adolescence. Anne est vendeuse, Suzanne ouvrière en confection, sa soeur Betty finit un CAP de couturière et catherine prétend faire des études dans l'université où elle est en réalité standardiste. les quatres amies ont les mêmes goûts, le rock, le ciné et les copains comme Bernard qui n'a d'yeux que pour Suzanne. La vie coule sans problème jusqu'au jour où Betty se retrouve enceinte après avoir oublié de prendre la pillule. Or Betty est mineure, par crainte de la colère de son père, Betty préfère l'aide de ses amies. Elles decident de l'aider à payer le coût d'un avortement clandestin. Mais l'argent manque.
