Le chanteur Goopy et le percussionniste Bagha, tous deux chassés de leurs villages respectifs à cause de leurs horribles prestations, font connaissance dans la forêt. Ils parviendront à empêcher le déclenchement d'une guerre imminente entre les États voisins de Shundi et Halla, pourtant dirigés par deux frères, mais dont l'un est sous l'influence néfaste d'un magicien qui a du reste également ensorcelé toute la population en la rendant muette. De fil en aiguille, grâce à leur habileté, les deux héros vont combattre les forces du mal et rétablir l'harmonie entre les frères et les royaumes, obtenant même de chacun la main d'une princesse.

In a Louisiana nursing home in 1999, Paul Edgecomb becomes nervous while watching the 1935 film Top Hat. The scientists eventually settle upon the prisoner; his key to the past is a vague but obsessive memory from his pre-war childhood of a woman (Hélène Chatelain) he had seen on the observation platform ("the jetty") at Orly Airport shortly before witnessing a startling incident there. He had not understood exactly what happened but knew he had seen a man die.

An archaeological team, digging in a remote village and led by an old professor, unearths an old Roman artifact, a gravestone bearing some mysterious inscriptions. After realizing that they have stumbled upon something precious, the professor collapses with a heart attack. Seemingly dead for people around him, he finds himself in a sort of afterlife state and realizes that the stone marked a passage into the classical underworld so he starts mingling with the antique spirits of the dead. The spirits themselves appear just as silly and petty as the peasants from the village above them, and in their desire to see what happened to their descendants, they find themselves surprised by the modern world of the living.
