In the near future, most of humanity has been infected by a variation of a fungus known as the Ophiocordyceps unilateralis (also referred to as a zombie fungus). The infected, referred to as "hungries", quickly lose their mental powers and feed on the flesh of healthy humans. The disease spreads through blood and spit, but can also spread through spores created by the fungus, which needs an unknown trigger to be opened. The few surviving members of the human race live in heavily-guarded Birmingham.
Alan (David Arnott) comes to believe that he is the last person on Earth after some sort of apocalypse destroyed the human race. But soon he meets the beautiful Sarah (Jeri Ryan), and falls in love with her. She doesn't feel too much for Alan, who is not physically attractive to her, but is very afraid he shouldn't leave her alone. Then they meet Raphael (Dan Montgomery), a much better looking and more charismatic man, who soon starts a relationship with Sarah. Alan plots to expel Raphael, and succeeds. When he comes back, it is revealed that Sarah sent out balloons with notes for him to come back, and they in turn expel Alan.

James Furlong is the last in a long line of Furlongs who were each blessed or cursed with a strange ability. His grandfather, Charlie went temporarily blind when he thought about sex. His father, Philip could turn off anything electrical when he was frightened. From the moment of his violent birth, involving the death of his mother, his life seems ill-fated, but it is unclear what kind of ability, if any, he possesses. Growing up in rural Ireland, his grandmother tells him about the strange quirks of his ancestors and the boy begins to experiment on himself, longing to discover some extraordinary, hidden power. But instead, his experiments lead to the death of his family's livestock, followed swiftly by the loss of Philip and his beloved grandmother, Charlotte.
