Après avoir commis un meurtre dans un accès de rage, Allen Ménaric est interné dans un établissement psychiatrique pour patients particulièrement violents. Il se retrouve brutalement plongé dans un environnement aussi brutal que déstabilisant. Grâce à un programme de socialisation, il fait la connaissance de Mia, maniaco-dépressive, qui lui redonne le goût à la vie. Toujours hanté par son passé, Allen décide de protéger la jeune femme des autres patients.

It is revealed that the jewel thief is Stonely (Don Beddoe), owner of a bar.

Vienna taxi driver Toni Sponer dreams of going to the US. One day, an American businessman is waiting for his cab, when jealous concert pianist Claude Manelli (Lederer) shoots him dead because he suspected him of having an affair with his American wife Karen (Camden). Toni grabs the dead man's papers and takes over his identity. Later he falls in love with Karen who initially thinks that Toni is the killer but he is able to convince her that he is innocent. Together they try to flee to America with Karen's husband in hot pursuit. Both men are finally captured by the police but Toni receives only a small sentence of a few months in prison. Karen decides to wait for him.

1970s Marseille is ruled by a brutal drug gang importing morphine from Turkey, transforming it and exporting heroin to New York, called la French. The gang, led by the cold-hearted Gaètan Tany Zampa (Gilles Lellouche), is rounding up its incomes with extortion and robbings. Former Juvenile Court judge Pierre Michel is transferred to organized crime, but finds out that la French's crimes are difficult or impossible to prove and that the police unit investigating heroin trade under Captain Aimé-Blanc has nothing relevant to report.
Newlyweds Paul Lester (Ireland) and his wife Nancy (Randolph) are invited to visit Paul's friend Ed Stevens. They arrive to find Stevens gone and a mysterious phone call gets Paul to the other end of town. While he's away, Nancy is assaulted by a would-be burglar. Paul thinks there's something more going on than a missing persons case or a burglary and tries to interest Police Detective Frontelli (Leonard) in looking into it, but Frontelli is initially skeptical. When Stevens turns up under the wheels of a truck along with evidence tying him to an earlier hit-and-run murder, Paul is certain that there's some kind of organized conspiracy afoot. What he finds is a town slowly coming under siege from a secret band of anti-Semitic thugs masquerading as a patriotic organization, with whom Stevens had been involved and tried to quit. Paul and Nancy's situation goes from bad to dangerous when they accidentally stumble upon evidence that could hang the murderers.
