In a small Bulgarian provincial town during the 1980s, factory worker Vasil 'Vasko' Georgiev (Hristo Mutafchiev) has problems with the local Communist Party agent (Nikolai Urumov) who wants Vasko to monitor and report on the activities of his father-in-law, Bai Dan (Miki Manojlović). Bai Dan is the local "King of Backgammon" and is accused by the local authorities of conducting an illegal workshop in which he repairs bicycles and manufactures backgammon sets. Facing a moral dilemma, Vasko decides to emigrate beyond the Iron Curtain to Western Europe with his wife Yana (Ana Papadopulu) and his son Aleksander 'Sashko' (played as a child by Blagovest Mutafchiev). The family succeeds in crossing the border to Italy but face the prospect of lengthy detention in a bleak refugee camp until Vasko is able to pay for them to be smuggled into Germany.

A middle-school teacher (Gosheva) with a young daughter has several stresses in her life: one of her students is a petty thief, her father has taken up with a much younger woman after his wife died, and her husband is an unemployed drunkard who has wasted her earnings, supposedly trying to fix a broken-down camper rather than making the mortgage payments on their home. It has all become too much, as the bank is uncooperative, dismissive, and rigid regarding her situation, so she resorts to drastic measures to save her home from foreclosure.

Nanouk et Sedna, couple de vieux éleveurs de rennes iakoutes nomades, désormais sans troupeau, vivent dans une yourte rustique dans la toundra gelée de Sibérie arctique depuis 50 ans. Tandis que le mari Nanouk passe son temps à creuser la glace pour pêcher quelques maigres poissons et à confectionner des pièges pour petits et grands animaux, accompagné de son unique chien de traîneau à travers les grands espaces blancs enneigés, sa femme Sedna s'occupe aux tâches ménagères, lui donne un coup de main de temps à autre et soigne secrètement sa vilaine blessure nécrosée au ventre. Nanouk observe parfois un avion de ligne venu d'un monde inaccessible dont le vacarme et le sillage blanc déchirent le ciel azur. Il se rend régulièrement au pied de somptueuses et imposantes montagnes voisines pour charger sur son traîneau quelques pierres qu'il vient poser au pied de l'unique arbre rabougri de sa plaine. La vie s'écoule selon les traditions ancestrales, de manière simple et austère, à peine ponctuée de la visite de Chena qui les approvisionne en scooter de neige. Les retrouvailles du soir entre les deux époux, souvent peu loquaces, nichés au creux de l'abri sommaire, sont parfois jalonnées d'un regard nostalgique sur une vieille photo jaunie de leur fille Ága, qui a « succombé aux sirènes de la modernité », est partie travailler il y a longtemps dans une mine de diamants lointaine. Parfois ils échangent quelques phrases de sagesse ancestrale dans une intimité tout en retenue. Battue par un blizzard violent, la rudimentaire yourte de toile menace parfois de s'envoler et la bataille désespérée contre les éléments s'impose comme un question de survie.

Sofia's Last Ambulance opens on an ordinary working day of Krassi, Mila and Plamen, the paramedic crew on one of Sofia's dangerously dwindling fleet of emergency ambulances. The medical infra-structure is in ruins and the ambulance services is one of the hardest hit. Soon the daily pressure on the team is revealed in a sequence of absurdities. Unusual for a work about medical services, patients remained tactfully outside of the frame and sensationalism was rigorously avoided. Camera work focused closely on the faces of the ambulance crew to capture changes in their state of mind in their persistent efforts to work despite lack of means, exhaustion and ineffective bureaucracy.

Eastern Plays is the story of two alienated brothers, Hristo or Itso (Hristo Hristov), an artist woodcarver who is struggling with his methadone addiction, and Georgi (Ovanes Torosyan), a high school student who is dragged into a neo-Nazi gang. The central point of the film is an ethnically-motivated attack by Georgi's neo-Nazi gang on a Turkish family from Istanbul, who are spending the night in Sofia en route to Germany. While Georgi initially participates in the beating, he is frightened and runs away. Itso, who had seen the family at a restaurant while he dined with his now-ex-girlfriend Niki (Nikolina Yancheva), ends up intervening and saving the family, including the beautiful daughter Işıl (Saadet Işıl Aksoy). In his developing feelings for Işıl, Itso sees hope of a positive change in his destiny, while Georgi's actions and his brother's help make him question his philosophy and reconsider his outlook on life.

Peu à peu, il tombe amoureux d'elle. Pris dans un étau entre son marché avec la police et les mafieux bulgares, il devient par la force des choses un vrai proxénète et se rend compte qu'il a perdu un bien précieux : sa dignité.
