The film revolves around a festival of mayordomía in the Mexican Oaxaca state, wich revolves around on something like the idea of "king for a day." When the town celebrates the feast day of its patron saint, the church appoints a layman as mayordomo or steward, an honor that in effect is gained by being able to organize and cover the high costs of most of the saint's local festivities. The post is however very coveted by the locals as it is socially prestigious.

Le père de Gerardo a, autrefois, assassiné celui de Rómulo et ce dernier exige réparation. Gerardo, refusant cette alternative, est alors giflé par Rómulo. Flash-back : on explique l'origine de cette guerre incessante qui déchire les deux clans familiaux. Felipe Anguiano, fiancé de Mercedes, s'est vu contraint de tuer Filogonio Menchaca et de traverser le fleuve pour s'enfuir dans le désert. Surpris par un Menchaca, Felipe est, à son tour, abattu. Fin du flash-back. Revenu au village, Gerardo parvient à maîtriser Rómulo sans utiliser d'armes. Le cycle de la violence est enfin interrompu et les deux hommes finissent par fraterniser. Convaincu, Rómulo s'établit en ville afin d'y vivre en paix.

Cabrera, riche propriétaire, cherche à vendre son immeuble qu'il loue. Il doit procéder à des expulsions, mais les locataires, aux conditions de vie précaires, se révoltent. Cabrera fait alors appel à Pedro, dit "La Brute", un employé aux abattoirs, homme rustre et costaud, chargé de les effrayer. Cabrera lui demande de quitter son travail et l'installe chez lui. Paloma, la jeune femme de Cabrera ne tarde pas à tomber sous le charme viril de Pedro. Un soir, Pedro frappe l'un des locataires, qui, déjà malade, meurt peu après. Bientôt repéré, Pedro est pourchassé par les locataires furieux. Il se réfugie chez une jeune fille, Meche. Ni Meche, ni Pedro ne font le rapprochement avec l'homme que Pedro a tué, qui s'avère être le père de la jeune fille.

The film opens in Mexico, in the home of an upper-class antiques salesman named Don Carlos Montero and his wife Rosario, whose son, Carlos or Carlitos, is accused of stealing by the principal of his school. Carlitos is scolded harshly by his father when he comes home, and is locked in his room. Carlitos runs away, but is found by an engineer named Julio Mistral who works in the forest. Julio returns the boy to his parents, and Don Carlos is very grateful. Julio becomes great friends with the Montero family, but in private asks Rosario why she really married such a harsh mannered and older man.
