Au cœur d'une grande forêt, le fils Courge grandit en petit sauvage aux côtés de son père, un colosse bourru et tyrannique qui le maintient dans l'ignorance du monde des hommes. Les seuls amis du fils Courge sont des fantômes muets (dont celui de sa mère) ayant pris forme animale, qui communiquent avec lui par signes. Un jour, alors qu'il cherche à soigner son père blessé et inconscient, le jeune garçon s'aventure hors de la forêt, sur les conseils d'un des fantômes, et découvre un village. Il y fait la rencontre de Manon, la fille du docteur qui a accepté de soigner son père. Avec elle, il découvre l'existence d'un sentiment inconnu pour lui : l'amour. Il se lance alors à la recherche de celui de son père. Une fois Courge rétabli, il retourne vivre dans la forêt avec son fils. Ce dernier finit par apprendre ce qui est arrivé : Autrefois, le père Ronce s'opposait à l'amour de sa fille pour Courge. En pourchassant les amants, il est mort dans l'incendie qu'il avait lui-même provoqué. Courge et son amante ont fui dans la forêt où cette dernière est morte en accouchant de son fils. Fou de chagrin, Courge n'a jamais pu aimer l'enfant.

During the times of the British Raj in India, Mowgli is the 5-year-old son of the widowed Nathoo, whose wife died in childbirth. Nathoo works as a tour guide. That night, the deadly tiger Shere Khan attacks the encampment, killing some soldiers who had been hunting down several animals for fun in the jungle earlier, which had enraged him. When he tries to kill the third hunter, Buldeo, Nathoo defends Buldeo, who ungratefully leaves him to be mauled to death by Khan. In the confusion, Mowgli is lost in the jungle with his pet wolf, Grey Brother. Brydon and his men believe Mowgli has been killed too. Mowgli is taken by Bagheera, a gentle black panther, to the wolf pack. Mowgli also befriends a bear cub named Baloo.

Le film se déroule dans l'Arctique au début du XXI siècle. Un couple d'ours se prépare à la venue au monde de leur ourson en bavardant avec un corbeau maladroit. Par malheur, ils sont pris en chasse par une meute de loups, auxquels ils échappent après une poursuite mouvementée ; mais quelque temps après, l'ourse donne naissance à un ourson mort-né. Au même moment, l'épouse d'un chasseur inuit accouche d'un fils en pleine santé qu'ils nomment « Petit Ours ». Pendant ce temps, l'ourse est inconsolable après la mort de son petit. L'ours tente de la consoler par tous les moyens, puis, désespéré, erre sur la glace et arrive aux abords de la maison du chasseur au moment où celui-ci est absent. Il s'approche de la maison, aperçoit le nouveau-né et profite d'un moment où la mère a le dos tourné pour entrer dans la maison et s'emparer du petit. Malgré les efforts de la femme, il parvient à s'enfuir. Dès son retour, le chasseur se lance à la poursuite de l'ourse mais ne parvient pas à le rattraper.
