Terminator (character)

Terminator (character)

Real name Cyberdyne Systems Model 101, T-101, The « Arnold » Terminator, T-800 / T-850 « Model 101 » Surnoms :, « Oncle Bob », « Guardian », « Pops », « Carl »

The T-800 / T-850 Terminator—a cybernetic organism, initially portrayed as a programmable assassin and military infiltration unit, and then as a bodyguard and construction worker—is any one of a number of fictional characters portrayed by both Arnold Schwarzenegger and numerous actor stand-ins digitally overlayed with "Schwarzenegger's likeness" via using archived footage in the Terminator franchise. It is known in-universe as Model 101.

The T-101 (an abbreviation of its designation as Series 800, Cyberdyne Systems Terminator, Model 101, and its Series 850, Resistance Infiltrator Terminator, Model 101 variant) character first appeared as the titular antagonist in The Terminator, a 1984 film directed and co-written by James Cameron, and its sequels. The first film in the series features only one android: the one portrayed by Schwarzenegger, although a second T-800 played by Franco Columbu is shown in a future flashback scene. In the first two sequels, Schwarzenegger's Terminator is pitted against other Terminators; it appears briefly in the third sequel as a T-RIP (Resistance Infiltrator Prototype) CGI model. In the sequels, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Terminator Genisys, Schwarzenegger reprises the role, albeit as the protagonist instead of the antagonist, playing a different but visually identical "Terminator Model 101" in each film.

Within the Terminator universe created by Cameron, Terminators of the same "model" share identical characteristics. In the production of the films, this has allowed multiple Terminators to be portrayed by Schwarzenegger (with varying model iterations accounting for Schwarzenegger's physical aging as the series has progressed). In the context of the stories, this plot device provides a certain continuity for the human characters by exploiting their emotional familiarity with a particular "human" visage associated with each "model".

The "Terminator" title has also been used as a generic name for other human-simulating characters in the "Terminator" universe, notably the liquid metal shapeshifting T-1000 antagonist in the sequel Terminator 2: Judgment Day and a T-850 in the sequel Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.

John Connor has been living off the grid in Los Angeles in the years following the death of his mother, Sarah, from leukemia. Although Judgment Day did not occur on August 29, 1997, as expected, John still believes that a war between humans and the machines will occur. Unable to locate John in the past, Skynet sends a new model of the Terminator called the T-X back to July 24, 2004 to kill other members of the Human Resistance. The T-X is more advanced than previous Terminators, and has an endoskeleton with built-in weaponry, a liquid metal exterior similar to the T-1000, and the ability to reprogram other machines. Unlike previous Terminators, its standard appearance is female. The Resistance sends a reprogrammed Terminator (T-850 - Model 101) back in time to protect the T-X's targets including John and his future wife, Kate Brewster.

In 1995, John Connor is ten years old and living in Los Angeles with foster parents. His mother Sarah Connor had been preparing him throughout his childhood for his future role as the leader of the Human Resistance against Skynet, but was arrested after attempting to bomb a computer factory and imprisoned at a mental hospital under the supervision of Dr. Silberman. Skynet sends a new Terminator, designated as T-1000, back in time to kill John. The T-1000 is an advanced prototype composed of a mimetic polyalloy that allows it to take on the shape and appearance of almost anything it touches, and transform parts of its anatomy into knives and other stabbing weapons. The T-1000 arrives under a freeway, kills a policeman and assumes his identity. Meanwhile, the future John Connor has sent back a reprogrammed T-800 (Model 101) Terminator to protect his younger self.
