Cheng has four daughters. The oldest, Cheng On-yee, was from his first low-profile marriage that ended in divorce. He married fellow actress Lydia Shum in 1985 after 14 years of cohabitation. Cheng and Shum had a daughter, Joyce Cheng, two years into their marriage. They divorced eight months after their daughter's birth. In 1989, Cheng married Koon Jing-wah. At the turn of the century of China, the White Lotus Society plots to put the sinister Manchu Emperor Yuan Shikai (William Ho) to become the Emperor of China. However, he needs to given a Jade Ring possessed by his fiance Princess Sum-yuk (Michelle Reis). The White Lotus Society gets Yeung Kwan (Andy Lau) to get the princess. However, Yeung is actually a rebel leader working for Sun Yat-sen and he abducts Sum-yuk and find refuge at the Po Chi Lam clinic owned by Wong Kei-ying (Adam Cheng) with his mischievous son Wong Fei-hung (Willie Chi). Later, Fei-hung gets involved with Yeung and Sum Yuk and end up on the run together. Along the way, Fei-hung later learns the secrets of Drunken Boxing from an old master Uncle Yan (Lau Kar-leung).

The brash and ambitious Fong Sai-yuk meets the beautiful Ting-ting during a track and field competition and falls in love with her. Ting-ting is the daughter of Tiger Lui, a hot-headed hooligan. Fong Sai-yuk and his wife, Ting-ting, are now full-fledged members of the Red Flower Society, which is led by Fong's godfather, Chan Ka-lok, who intends to groom Fong to become his successor. During the Chinese Civil War, a group of war friends Ting Kwan-pik, Cheung, Lau Fuk-kwong and Cheung Cho-fan were captured and brutally tortured by officer Haye. After they escape, Ting headed to Shanghai and became a cop. Ting is also one of the few righteous, incorruptible cops in Shanghai. Although the police force consists mostly of corrupt cops, the superintendent is an honest man. One time during a drug raid, Ting kills Haye's uncle, Leung. Haye, who has know became an opium smuggler, vows of revenge and later kills Ting's partner. Ah Ha (Brigitte Lin) is an assassin known as Fire Dragon serving the evil Sixth Prince (Tan Lap-Man), who sent her on a mission to retrieve and destroy the incriminating letter but Yuen Ming (Max Mok), a wandering swordsman manages to save it.
