L'Equation préférée du Professeur est d'abord un roman de Yoko Ogawa, publié en 2003 et adapté en 2006 au cinéma par Takashi Koizumi. L'histoire est centrée autours d'un mathématicien, le Professeur, dont le cerveau a été endommagé suite à un accident de voiture en 1975. Depuis lors, sa mémoire se réduit aux 80 minutes qui viennent de passer, sans qu'il puisse donc se remémorer quoi que ce soit avant l'accident qui l'a laissé invalide...sans pour autant que ses facultés de mathématicien s'en trouvent détériorées. Le film conte l'histoire du Professeur dans ses relations, parfois difficiles, avec sa nouvelle femme de ménage, Kyoko, et le fils de cette dernière bientôt surnommé Racine. Peu à peu, entre les 3, se tissent des liens, essentiellement basés sur les mathématiques, qui constituent la seule raison d'exister du Professeur.

The assassination of Tokyo governor Takayama (Mac Yasuda) causes a stir of public outrage in Tokyo, Japan. Upon hearing the news of the incident, the FBI asks the CIA's Tokyo office to investigate the killing, believing it to be linked to the Yakuza, a dangerous Japanese mafia. Retired CIA agent Travis Hunter (Steven Seagal) and rookie FBI agent Sean Mac (Matthew Davis) are assigned to work on the case and to track down the perpetrators. The Japanese branch of the CIA starts sniffing around under the auspices of Homeland Security. During work, Mac proves to be more of a distraction, not really knowledgeable about procedures or Japanese customs. A group of travelers is stranded in a small country inn when the local river floods. As the bad weather continues, tensions rise amongst the travelers trapped at the inn. A traveling ronin (masterless samurai), Ihei Misawa takes it upon himself to cheer everyone up by arranging a splendid feast. The main story of the film is based on the life of a Japanese academic and author, Hyakken Uchida (1889–1971). The film opens with him resigning as professor of German, in the period immediately before the Second World War. The plot of the film is centered on his relationship with his former students, who care for him in his old age. The title, Not Yet in English, is an allusion to an ancient Japanese legend mentioned in one scene of the film, of an old man who refuses to die. This story is constantly referred to in the movie, as every year on the old man's birthday, his students throw him a party in which they all ask him, "Mada kai?" ("Are you ready?"). He responds by drinking a large ceremonial glass of beer and shouting "Mada dayo!" ("Not yet!"), implying that death may be near, but life still goes on. The movie also covers the events that transpire in between these birthdays, such as his moving into a new house, his discovery of (and loss of) a beloved house cat, etc. As the years progress, the annual celebrations shift from a fraternity party atmosphere to a gathering of families, and the ceremonial large glass of beer that Uchida drinks changes as well, but he always completes his full glass.
