Aleksandar "Saša" Petrović (14 January 1929 – 20 August 1994) was an acclaimed Yugoslav film director who was one of the leading European directors in the 1960s and one of the major figures of the Yugoslav Black Wave. Two of his films were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film : Three in 1966 and I Even Met Happy Gypsies (Feather Gatherers) in 1967. “I Even Met Happy Gypsies” (“Skupljaci perja”) is the first movie that presents the existence of Gypsies in society and in everyday life. It is also the first full-feature film where Gypsies speak their own language, Roma. Most roles are interpreted by real Gypsies; this is their movie. “As a child, I observed them and saw in these people faith and irrationality,” said Petrović “I Even Met Happy Gypsies” won the FIPRESCI Prize and the Grand Prize of the Jury at the Cannes Film Festival. It also received a nomination for a Golden Globe. In 1967 Petrović was a member of the jury at the 17th Berlin International Film Festival.

One of his most famous films is It Rains in My Village. Petrović found inspiration for this film in Fyodor Dostoyevsky's novel The Possessed. The film was nominated for a Palme d'Or (Golden Palm) at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival

In 1973, Petrović was forced to leave his post at the Belgrade Film Academy after being accused of holding anti-communist views by the communist government of Yugoslavia. In late December 1989 he joined the founding committee of the Democratic Party in Serbia, the first opposition anti-communist party in Serbia.

Biography

Comptant à partir des années 1960 parmi les cinéastes serbes les plus connus, et membre de la Vague noire yougoslave, Aleksandar Petrović a vu deux de ses films nommés à l'Oscar du meilleur film étranger à Hollywood : Tri en 1966 et J'ai même rencontré des tziganes heureux en 1967. Ce dernier film lui a également valu le Grand prix spécial du jury et le Prix FIPRESCI de la Critique internationale à Cannes. En 1979 distinction décernée - Meilleur film de l’histoire du cinéma Yougoslave le film J’ai même rencontré les Tziganes heureux' d'Aleksandar Petrović, à la suite de l'enquête menée par les critiques et les artistes yougoslaves (enquête menée par l’Institut du Film yougoslave).

1962 - Aleksandar Petrović est nommé professeur à l’Académie de cinéma, Théâtre et Télévision de Belgrade. Il tient la chaire de la mise en scène.

En 1969, Aleksandar Petrović reçoit la médaille de l’ordre de Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres du gouvernement français de la main d’André Malraux, Ministre de la Culture. Ce fut la première fois qu’un cinéaste yougoslave était ainsi reconnu.

Pendant de nombreuses années il a été le Président de l’association des cinéastes yougoslaves. Il a également été un des fondateurs et membre de l’Académie européenne du Cinéma et de la Télévision.

Membre de la SACD (Société des Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques – Paris, Bruxelles, Montréal). Il a été un des fondateurs de l’Académie des arts et des sciences du cinéma (AFUN-Akademija za Filmsku Umetnost i Nauku) et un des fondateurs et le Président du “FEST” (le Festival des meilleurs films étrangers de Belgrade).

Aleksandar Petrović était le président ou membre du jury de nombreux festivals nationaux et internationaux (il fut membre du jury du 17e Berlin International Film Festival en 1967 et du Festival de Cannes en 1971).

En 1973 Aleksandar Petrović est renvoyé de l’Académie du cinéma et son passeport lui est confisqué. Il rentre alors dans une période de disgrâce en Yougoslavie qui durera dix-huit ans. Il est considéré une personne dangereuse et gênante pour le régime. n’est que dans les années 1990 que le Tribunal lui donnera officiellement raison en concluant qu’il s’agissait d’une « inacceptable disqualification politique». Aleksandar Petrović précisera que c’était une machination politique qui le visait personnellement. Son statut d’enseignant sera rétabli.

En décembre 1989, il rejoint le Parti démocratique de Serbie, première force politique d'opposition autorisée face au Parti communiste.

Aleksandar Petrovic a laissé derrière lui d'innombrables textes. Depuis 1949 jusqu’à la fin de sa vie il a écrit pour de nombreux journaux et revues spécialisées, aussi bien yougoslaves que mondiaux. Durant des années il fut critique de cinéma, essayiste et journaliste. Il est l’auteur de centaines d’articles sur le cinéma et la théorie cinématographique. Vers la fin de sa vie Aleksandar Petrović écrit aussi des articles sur la politique et s’engage activement pour la démocratie. Il est inhumé au cimetière du Père-Lachaise (57e division).

Le Festival de films d’auteurs de Belgrade (FAF) a été créé en 1995 en l’honneur d’Aleksandar Petrović. Le grand prix porte son nom du Grand Prix Aleksandar Saša Petrović.

A mentally challenged girl is defended by a young man who takes care of pigs. He gets into a fight with the local saloon keeper, prompting the man to get the boy drunk and bribe a priest into marrying the boy to the unfortunate girl. A female teacher arrives in town to teach women how to paint. She uses the young boy as a model and then as a toy for her pleasure. The teacher subsequently takes another lover and abandons the young man, claiming that she was unaware of his marriage. The young boy eventually kills his wife, but his father takes the blame for the crime and confesses his sins before he dies in prison. As a conclusion to this sad movie, the townspeople punish the young boy for what he has done.

The protagonist, Bora (Bekim Fehmiu), is a charming but mean-spirited gypsy, while his older wife, Lence (Olivera Vučo), is submissive. Bora is in love with the younger Tisa (Gordana Jovanović), who is being offered in marriage by her father. The two get themselves in trouble and eventually have to flee. Tisa rejects her husband and she and Bora get married in the church. Tisa tries to get to Belgrade, while Bora stabs a man in a knife fight. They are both, therefore, exiled from their Romani camp, yet their adventures continue.

During the late 14th century Serbia becomes the target of the Ottoman Empire. While the respected Serbian noble Strahinja Banović is out hunting, a Turkish renegade gang burns his castle, kills all of his servants, and takes the young wife of Banović Strahinja. Strahinja begins a long quest to rescue his wife despite everybody else's doubts in her fidelity. Strahinja gathers a posse of scoundrels and goes after the bandits. In the meantime, the Turkish bandit Alija tries to seduce Strahinja's wife Anđa, but she refuses him. However, over a period of time she begins to weaken.
