Alexander Payne (born Constantine Alexander Payne; February 10, 1961) is an American film director and screenwriter, known for the films Election (1999), About Schmidt (2002), Sideways (2004) and The Descendants (2011). His films are noted for their dark humor and satirical depictions of contemporary American society.
Payne réalise son premier long métrage en 1996, Citizen Ruth, dont il est également coscénariste. Tournée à Omaha, sa ville natale, cette comédie satirique vaut à son actrice principale, Laura Dern, le prix d'interprétation au Festival de Montréal. Le réalisateur poursuit ensuite dans le même registre avec L' Arriviste (1999), une satire sur la réussite à l'américaine interprétée par Matthew Broderick et Reese Witherspoon.
En 2001, il signe le scénario de Jurassic Park 3 de Joe Johnston, avant de se consacrer à l'écriture et à la réalisation de Monsieur Schmidt. Ce drame met en scène un actuaire retraité qui perd tous ses repères, rôle qui permet à Jack Nicholson de remporter le Golden Globe du meilleur acteur (catégorie drame), et à Alexander Payne de glaner, en compagnie de Jim Taylor, celui du meilleur scénario. Une récompense que les deux acolytes obtiennent de nouveau en 2005 (en sus de celle qui consacre la meilleure comédie) pour Sideways, quatrième opus du réalisateur, qui retrace l'itinéraire mouvementé de deux amis sur la route des vins en Californie.
Il a eu une aventure en 2003 avec l'actrice Sandra Oh et ils se sont quittés en 2006.

Biography
Alexander Payne est issu d'une famille d'origine grecque. Son grand-père paternel a anglicisé le nom de la famille, Papadopoulos, en Payne. Diplômé d'histoire et de littérature espagnole à l'université Stanford, il est également titulaire d'une maîtrise de cinéma (UCLA). Son court métrage de fin d'études, The Passion of Martin, est présenté en 1991 au Festival du film indépendant de Sundance.Payne réalise son premier long métrage en 1996, Citizen Ruth, dont il est également coscénariste. In Billings, Montana, Woody Grant (Bruce Dern) is found walking in traffic and stopped by a police officer. He is picked up by his son, David (Will Forte), who learns that Woody wants to go to Lincoln, Nebraska to collect a $1 million sweepstakes prize he has won. When David sees the sweepstakes letter, he realizes that it is a mail scam to make a person purchase magazine subscriptions. He returns Woody to his home, where David's mother Kate (June Squibb) becomes annoyed by Woody insisting on collecting his money. After Woody is picked up again, David and his brother Ross (Bob Odenkirk), a local news anchor, discuss putting Woody in a retirement home. David is paid a visit by his ex-girlfriend Noel (Missy Doty), who is returning his things, refusing to move back in. Miles Raymond is an aspiring – but unsuccessful – writer, a wine aficionado and a divorced, depressed, borderline alcoholic middle-aged English teacher living in San Diego, who takes his soon-to-be-married actor friend and college roommate Jack Cole, on a road trip through Santa Ynez Valley wine country. Warren Schmidt is retiring from his position as an actuary with Woodmen of the World, an insurance company in Omaha, Nebraska. After a retirement dinner, Schmidt finds it hard to adjust to his new life, feeling useless. The movie opens with Ruth Stoops and a man (apparently an ex-boyfriend) having intercourse on a bed in a flophouse, after which he disrespectfully throws her out of the apartment. Chuck Levine, a womanizing bachelor, and Larry Valentine, a widower struggling to raise his two children, are two veteran New York City fire fighters. During a routine sweep of a burned building, a segment of floor collapses on Chuck. However, Larry quickly shields him from the falling debris, saving his life. Later, he and Chuck wake up in a hospital, where Chuck vows to repay Larry in any way possible. This incident serves as a catalyst for Larry's epiphany: death is both inevitable and unpredictable. This prompts him to significantly increase his life insurance policy, but he runs into difficulties naming his children as primary beneficiaries in his policy. He is told he should get remarried so his new spouse could be the primary beneficiary; however, it doesn't specify who he has to marry. Inspired by a newspaper article about domestic partnerships, Larry asks Chuck to enter a civil union with him. Although Chuck declines at first, he is reminded of his debt to Larry and finally agrees, entering a domestic partnership and becoming Larry's primary beneficiary in the event of his death. To their dismay, however, New York City investigators soon arrive to inquire about their abrupt partnership, under suspicion of fraud. Chuck and Larry decide to enlist the help of lawyer Alex McDonough, played by Jessica Biel, who suggests they get married and move in together to prove they're committed. Chuck reluctantly agrees. The pair soon travel to Canada for a quick marriage (so quick they use a nearby homeless person as the best man) and begin living together.
