Cassie Russell (Catherine Bell) is given little time to plan her stepson Brandon's (Matthew Knight) wedding to Tara (Ashley Leggat). In addition, Martha (Catherine Disher), Middleton's new mayor, wants Cassie to head a silent auction fundraiser for the Middleton Botanical Gardens. Casey and Derek are back but nothing has changed, they are still at each other's throats, and still have sibling rivalry. The only good thing about it all is that it's summer vacation, and everyone is planning on going on a trip to Casey and Lizzie's grandmother's lakefront lodge for the summer. But their plans get a little messed up when Derek is forced into going by his dad. Things get even more messed up when Casey has to ride with Derek to the Blue Heron Lodge. On their way up there they get pulled over by the cops, meanwhile Edwin, Lizzie, Marti, Nora and George have already arrived. They soon find out that when Nora's mom said she wanted her grandchildren to visit, she meant her blood grandchildren, but agrees to let them stay, while George and Nora head for Montreal. Soon Derek and Casey get to the lodge but get stopped by Edwin who informs them about what's happened. After this, Derek says he wants to leave, Casey takes his keys, and he starts running after her. That's when Derek meets Felicia. One thing leads to another and Derek stars dating the competing lodge's daughter, then he soon realizes that it wasn't the best thing to be doing, and he breaks up with her. Meanwhile, Casey meets Jesse, a waiter at the lodge dining area, and they both love to dance and start dancing. Meanwhile Edwin gets hurt, Lizzie meets a guy, and Marti finds a lizard. Soon one thing leads to another and they end of trying to save the lodge. And..........they succeed. At the end they have a dance party, and it shows the ending credits then shows it a year later when the first McDonald-Venturi is born. They named him Simon, and everything is well, and everyone lives happily ever after.

The plot of the movie concerns Kelly Collins, a free-spirited eighth grade girl whose mother gets married to Brigadier General Joe "Sir" Maxwell (Gary Cole). When her new stepfather becomes the Commandant of a military school, George Washington Military Academy, Kelly and her family move upstate. Kelly has to enroll at the school, since it is the only school in the area, leaving behind her art school and her best friend Amanda. On her first day at military school, she befriends Carla (Andrea Lewis), a girl who has been there for a long time and shows her the ropes. Kelly, at first, has trouble fitting in and obeying the orders of the officers above her, especially Cadet Captain Jennifer Stone (Christy Carlson Romano), who has a crush on Cadet Major Brad Rigby (Shawn Ashmore). Kelly feels drawn to Brad instantly, and competes with Captain Stone for his attention. Captain Stone does not treat Kelly well, verbally abusing her and destroying her personal belongings. After taking a long time to complete the obstacle course, Captain Stone has Kelly take the course again. After getting all dirty from the course and finishing it, Kelly heads to the dance, but stumbles and ruins Captain Stone's dress at the dance. Her stepfather talks to Kelly in his office about the incident and what the teachers are saying about her. At home, Kelly is ready to tell her mom about her feelings and opinions of the new school, but before she could even start, her mother reveals to her that Kelly is going to have a half-sibling (implying that her mother and her stepfather are going to have a baby together). Seeing that her mom needs her support, she vows to help her stepfather learn how to take care of a child and make him "ready" to be a dad. To get back at Captain Stone for destroying her blanket, Kelly decides to paint Stone's hair in the middle of the night, in the same pattern as a blanket of Kelly's that Stone ruined.
