Audie Leon Murphy est un acteur américain, né le 20 juin 1925à Kingston, au Texas, et décédé lors d'un accident d'avion le 28 mai 1971, près de Roanoke, en Virginie (États-Unis).
Il tourne son premier film Beyond the Glory en 1948 avec Alan Ladd. En 1949, il épouse la jeune actrice Wanda Hendrix (dont il divorce l'année suivante) et tourne son premier succès personnel Bad Boy de Kurt Neumann. Il épouse en secondes noces Pamela Archer en 1951 avec laquelle il restera marié jusqu'à sa mort. Dans les années cinquante, il devient une star appréciée du public et tourne avec de prestigieux metteurs en scène comme John Huston ou Budd Boetticher. Il tournera une vingtaine de westerns B pour les studios Universal Pictures. En 1955, il tient la vedette dans L'enfer des hommes, mis en scène par Jesse Hibbs et tiré de son autobiographie. Il écrit les scénarios de nombre de ses films et participe à leur production. Tout cela lui apporte la fortune mais il reste cantonné dans des films populaires. Il trouvera son meilleur rôle dans Un américain bien tranquille, de Joseph L. Mankiewicz.
Il s'oriente en même temps vers la télévision et interprète le détective Tom Smith dans Whispering Smith en 1961 pour la chaîne CBS. Ruiné par les échecs de ses derniers films et par un homme d'affaires peu scrupuleux, affaibli par l'abus de médicaments et de drogues, accusé de tentative de meurtre par un de ses voisins, Audie Murphy est une star déchue. Il tente un come back en produisant et interprétant un Jesse James vieillissant dans Qui tire le premier (A Time for Dying) mis en scène par Budd Boetticher mais il ne verra pas le film terminé.
Son corps est inhumé avec les honneurs militaires au cimetière national d'Arlington (Washinghton DC).

Élevé dans une famille modeste d'ouvriers agricoles de dix enfants, Audie Leon Murphy s'engage dans l'infanterie après de courtes études. Il est considéré comme l'un des soldats les plus décorés de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Il reçut une trentaine de médailles dont la Medal of Honor qu'il obtint pour son héroïsme au cours des combats dans le Bois de Holtzwihr dans les combats de la poche de Colmar.Il tourne son premier film Beyond the Glory en 1948 avec Alan Ladd. Cass Bunning (Richard Lapp), a farm boy with a talent for shooting, meets up with Nellie (Anne Randall), a naive woman from the East, who has been lured West by the promise of a waitressing job which turns out to be in a brothel. The Arizona Territory 1868: The Apaches, led by Cochise (Michael Keep), are on the warpath. Army Captain Bruce Coburn (Audie Murphy) is tasked with escorting homesteaders to Apache Wells where they can concentrate their defense against the Apache. But there is dissension in the ranks as some of the men under Coburn’s command feel they are being driven too hard. In a small town in 1880s Colorado, a gang of outlaws led by Drago (Morgan Woodward) rob a bank and kidnap a saloon singer, Uvalde (Joan Staley). Captain Stanton is a renowned Indian Fighter with his animosity stirred by the fact that his career officer father was forced to resign after trusting a group of Indians who broke their word to him. Set during the Korean War, the film depicts the atrocities of battle. Sgt. Garth (Barron), an egomaniacal, blood thirsty leader, neglects to tell his soldiers that there has been a cease fire.
