Octobre 1962. Norbi, 12 ans, vit dans une petite ville industrielle typique du sud du Luxembourg. Autriche, dans les années 1950. Franzi, onze ans, vit dans un petit village avec ses parents. Si les livres d’images sont la passion des autres enfants, les photos sont celle de Franzi. Elle passe ses journées et ses nuits entre rêve et réalité, en donnant vie aux photos prises par son père au Maroc, en Algérie et en Tunisie lorsqu’il était engagé dans la légion étrangère. Ces images sont énigmatiques et stimulent l’imagination de la jeune fille. La fascination et l’horreur ne sont jamais bien loin. Les rêves fébriles du père, déclenchés par des résurgences de la malaria, deviennent le cauchemar de la fille. Plusieurs années plus tard, Franziska, qui est à présent adulte et accomplie, se rend à Novi Sad, en Serbie, à la recherche de sa sœur disparue. Durant ce voyage, les images de son enfance refont surface.

Casanova a accepté la proposition du duc de Waldstein : il est bibliothécaire du château de Dux, en Bohême. En fin de vie, il s’est mis à y écrire ses Mémoires. C’est là qu’il reçoit la visite d’Elisa von der Recke, qui s’intéresse de près à son manuscrit. Casanova ne reconnaît pas dans les traits de cette femme pleine de charme une jeune fille qu’il avait séduite jadis et qui avait voulu mourir pour lui. Pour le fameux libertin, l’arrivée d’Elisa est à la fois stimulante, l’occasion de se lancer un nouveau défi (celui de la conquérir), et menaçante (il s’interroge sur la motivation de la voyageuse).

As the film opens Eichmann has been captured in South America. It is revealed that he escaped there via the "rat line" and with forged papers. Arendt, now a professor in New York, volunteers to write about the trial for The New Yorker and is given the assignment. Observing the trial, she is impressed by how ordinary and mediocre Eichmann appears. She had expected someone scary, a monster, and he does not seem to be that. In a cafe conversation in which the Faust story is raised it is mentioned that Eichmann is not in any way a Mephisto (the devil). Returning to New York, Arendt has massive piles of transcripts to go through. Her husband has a brain aneurysm, almost dying, and causing her further delay. She continues to struggle with how Eichmann rationalized his behavior through platitudes about bureaucratic loyalty, and that he was just doing his job. When her material is finally published, it immediately creates enormous controversy, resulting in angry phone calls and a falling out from her old friend, Hans Jonas.
