Bertram Grassby (23 December 1880 – 7 December 1953) was an English actor. He appeared in 96 silent era films between 1914 and 1927.

Grassby was married to American actress Gerard Alexander. He was born in Lincolnshire, England and died in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Biography

Installé aux États-Unis, Bertram Grassby entame sa carrière au théâtre et joue notamment à Broadway (New York) vers la fin des années 1900, dans une opérette et deux pièces, dont une adaptation d’Anna Karénine de Léon Tolstoï en 1907, aux côtés de Robert Warwick.

Au cinéma, exclusivement durant la période du muet, il contribue à quatre-vingt-dix-sept films américains (dont des courts métrages), les neuf premiers sortis en 1915 (tel The Circular Staircase d'Edward LeSaint, avec Guy Oliver et Eugenie Besserer).

Suivent entre autres Salomé de J. Gordon Edwards (1918, avec Theda Bara et G. Raymond Nye), Sérénade de Raoul Walsh (1921, avec Miriam Cooper et George Walsh), The Young Rajah de Phil Rosen (1922, avec Rudolph Valentino et Charles Ogle) et Son heure de King Vidor (1924, avec Aileen Pringle et John Gilbert).

Ses deux derniers films muets (après lesquels il se retire), réalisés par Alan Crosland et sortis en 1927, sont Le Roman de Manon (avec John Barrymore et Dolores Costello) et The Beloved Rogue (avec John Barrymore et Conrad Veidt).

Chevalier Fabien des Grieux, who has forsworn the world for the church, falls passionately in love with young Manon Lescaut when he encounters her en route to a convent with her brother André. The lustful Comte Guillot de Morfontaine offers André a tempting sum for Manon, and learning of their bargain, Fabien takes her to Paris, where they spend an idyllic week in a garret. André finds her, persuades her to leave Fabien, and tries to force her into an alliance with Morfontaine--then rescues Manon from the advances of a brutal apache. Fabien, crushed to believe that Manon has become Morfontaine's mistress, is about to take his vows but is deterred by her love for him. King Louis sees Manon in Richelieu's drawing room and wins her. The rejected Morfontaine orders her arrest and deportation, but he is killed by Fabien, who joins Manon on a convict ship bound for America. After inciting the convicts to mutiny, he escapes with her in a small boat.

Jack (Haines) is a young man who has a wild lifestyle. This displeases his father. Jack wants to prove to him he can be a hardworking man as well and decides to find work at a railroad yard as a laborer. Silent Bill Brachley is a convict who has escaped jail and steals Jack's car. Jack chases him and eventually meets Mary (Hammerstein). Brachley is led back to jail and swears revenge. He escapes jail yet again and confronts Jack. After Jack wins the fight, he receives the respect from his father and has Mary as his sweetheart.
