Caleb Carr, né le 2 août 1955) à New York, est un romancier, scénariste et un historien militaire américain.
Il entreprend des études supérieures au Kenyon College, dans l'État de l'Ohio, puis entre à l'Université de New York, où il obtient un diplôme en histoire.
En littérature, il publie son premier roman, intitulé Casing the Promised Land, en 1979. Il est notamment l'auteur d'une biographie Le Diable blanc (The Devil Soldier, 1992) et des romans L'Ange des ténèbres (The Angel of Darkness, 1997) et Le Tueur de temps (Killing Time, 2000) et avant eux de L'Aliéniste (The Alienist, 1996), roman pour lequel il reçoit le Grand prix de littérature policière et le Prix Mystère de la critique. Dans le roman policier historique Le Secrétaire italien (The Italian Secretary, 2005), il met en scène le personnage de Sherlock Holmes qui vient en aide à la reine Victoria pour résoudre une affaire criminelle aux complexes ramifications historiques.
Il habite actuellement dans l'État de New York, dans une propriété fermière nommée “Misery Mountain”, dans la ville de Berlin du comté de Rensselaer, située à une centaine de kilomètres au nord de la ville de New York.
En 2004 et 2005, il participe à la conception en tant que scénariste à deux préquelles au film L'Exorciste (The Exorcist) : L'Exorciste : Au commencement (Exorcist: The Beginning) et Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist.

Biography
Né à New York, il passe une enfance assez mouvementé dans le quartier de Greenwich Village. Son père, Lucien Carr, qui a été président de l’agence de presse UPI (United Press International) et est une figure de la Beat Generation, un mouvement littéraire et artistique américain des années 1950, « écope de deux ans pour avoir poignardé un soupirant homosexuel ». Il avait auparavant eu des amis de passage, tels Allen Ginsberg et William Burroughs, mais le jeune Caleb Carr ne se reconnaît « aucune sympathie pour les idées professées par la Beat Generation ». The film follows various plot arcs all occurring on New Year's Eve of 1981. Monica (Plimpton) is throwing a big New Year's bash and is desperately afraid no one will attend. Early on the only person to have arrived is her friend Hillary (Catherine Kellner). Many years before the events in The Exorcist, the young Father Lankester Merrin (played by Skarsgård, who played the same part in Exorcist: The Beginning) travels to East Africa. Merrin has taken a sabbatical from the Church and devoted himself to history and archaeology as he struggles with his shattered faith. He is haunted especially by an incident in a small village in occupied Holland during World War II, where he served as parish priest. Near the end of the war, a sadistic Nazi SS commander, in retaliation for the murder of a German trooper, forces Merrin to participate in arbitrary executions in order to save a full village from slaughter.

The film opens with a bloodied and terrified priest slowly making his way across the bodies of thousands of dead soldiers. There are many crows and hyenas roving around the bodies. The priest reaches the dead body of another priest and tries take a small demon idol of the head of Pazuzu from his hand, but, suddenly, the dead priest briefly comes back to life and stops the living priest from taking it. The camera pulls back to reveal that the entire valley is littered with dead soldiers, many have been crucified upside down.
