Carl (or Karl) Lange (30 October 1909 – 23 June 1999) was a German film actor. He appeared in more than 70 films between 1954 and 1985. He was born in Flensburg, Germany and died in Ostfildern, Germany.

After an animated introduction about the history of extinct species (e.g. the quagga, the great auk and the dodo) it has gone to 60 countries and territories (including Turkey, Spain, Germany, Poland, Australia, Borneo, Chile, Spitzbergen, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, India, Java, USA, and Peru) on all continents and to the most famous national parks. Species like the Hamilton's frog (Leiopelma hamiltoni) or the Javan rhinoceros were filmed for the very first time. Other sequences including footage of the kakapo, the takahe, the dancing of the red-crowned cranes, the fishing Kodiak bears, the whooping crane, the Asiatic lion, the Komodo dragon, the tuatara, the indri, and the birds of paradise. In particular the filming of the whooping cranes was the result of adventurous circumstances. Because the whooping crane was among the rarest birds in the world in the early 1960s there was no permission to entry the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge in Texas. Fortunately the cranes were provided with food by a plane and during that time the birds came to a wetland in the proximity of the fence. Schuhmacher and Barth planted themselves in a boat in a channel in front of the fence and were able to take some footage from a female and a chicken.

The plot chronology is set in the 18th century and the probable story location is Germany. Baroness Lilian von Brabant and her lawyer Roger Mont Elise receive an invitation to the Blood Castle, in Sander Valley, where a large inheritance is awaiting the baroness. Both decide to go; the Baroness because of the inheritance and Roger seeing a chance to get more information regarding his birth. Upon arriving at the valley, they meet the monk Fabian with a proclivity for profanities who offers to assist them in finding their way to the castle, the place where, forty years ago, Count Regula had murdered twelve maidens, in an attempt to use their blood to achieve immortality. However he was one maiden short of his goal, and he was drawn, quartered and beheaded for his crime. As he was dying, the Count threatened revenge against those responsible for his death.

After the Civil War, desperadoes led by a renegade named Rollins, following the settlers moving westward, try to drive a wedge in the friendship between the whites and the Indians. Apache chief Winnetou and his frontier friend, Old Shatterhand, do what they can to keep the peace. Rollins' henchmen try to keep Winnetou away from the warring Jicarillos' chief, White Buffalo, but he fights his way through, only to be confronted by Rollins carrying the chief's son, stabbed in the chest with Winnetou's knife. Le riche Sir Cyrus Bradley est victime d'un chantage du syndicat du crime « La Tortue ». Alsconi, le chef, dans un fauteuil roulant, qui vit dans un manoir richement meublé à Trieste, ordonne à sa maîtresse Laura Lorelli et à son confident Crantor de s'occuper du meurtre de Bradley s'il ne paie pas. À Londres, ils engagent le lanceur de couteau Shapiro, qui tue Bradley. Alors que Crantor doit aussi éliminer Don Micklem, l'héritier de Bradley, un jeune étudiant, Laura l'avertit par téléphone, si bien que l'attaque échoue. Alsconi lui dit qu'il serait stupide d'éliminer Don, qu'il est l'héritier après tout. Alsconi voudrait plutôt essayer d'obtenir de lui ce que Bradley lui a refusé. Peu de temps après, Don n'est pas entièrement entre les mains d'Alsconi. Le patron dit au jeune homme que Laura lui a sauvé la vie pour la deuxième fois. Alsconi vient rapidement au point qu'il ne libérera Don que contre une rançon de 500 000 DM. Le jeune étudiant, cependant, lui fait clairement comprendre qu'il serait probablement tué de toute façon, alors plutôt sans rançon.
