Van Dien met actress Catherine Oxenberg, who is 7 years his senior, during the filming of the 1999 TV movie The Collectors, and they soon worked together again in the 1999 thriller The Omega Code. On May 8, 1999 they married in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 2005 the couple appeared in their own reality series, I Married a Princess, which aired on the Lifetime Television channel in the United States, LIVINGtv in the United Kingdom and Lifestyle You in Australia; Oxenberg's mother is Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia. During the 2006-2007 TV season, Van Dien and Oxenberg co-starred in the American drama series Watch Over Me on MyNetworkTV.
Van Dien and Oxenberg have two daughters, Maya (born September 20, 2001) and Celeste Alma (born October 3, 2003), both of whom follow their mother in the line of succession to the British throne.
Oxenberg and Van Dien are celebrity ambassadors for the non-profit organization Childhelp.

Van Dien was married to Carrie Mitchum (granddaughter of Robert Mitchum) from 1993 to 1997. They have two children, Casper "Cappy" Robert Van Dien III and Caroline Dorothy Grace "Gracie" Van Dien, of whom Van Dien holds full custody. L'an 2563, 300 ans après que la Terre a connu une catastrophe appelée "l'effondrement" consécutive à une guerre contre Mars. Dans la ville d'Iron City infestée par le crime, le Dr Dyson Ido, médecin spécialisé dans les augmentations biomécaniques, cherche des pièces détachées dans une décharge à ciel ouvert venant de Zalem, dernière cité céleste de la planète, surplombant Iron City, et où chacun rêve d'aller. Ido trouve le corps d'une cyborg en piteux état. Il va alors la ramener dans sa clinique pour la réparer. La jeune cyborg se réveille, réparée mais amnésique. Le docteur Ido la rebaptise Alita (du prénom de sa fille décédée) et lui fait découvrir le monde dans lequel ils survivent. Mais Alita se découvre des réflexes combatifs et une force surhumaine, veut toujours en savoir plus et aller plus loin. Elle fait la connaissance d'Hugo, un jeune revendeur de pièces détachées auquel elle se lie rapidement. Alita va tenter de comprendre qui elle est réellement et d'où elle vient. On an asteroid, the Terran Federation's Fort Casey is crawling with bugs. The starship Alesia begins to deploy its Mobile Infantry troopers, by dropship, to seize and control the hangar and rescue any survivors. Lieutenant Daugherty's 'Alpha' team lands and immediately engages bugs, fighting through to rendezvous with the surviving Fort Casey troopers. After setting explosives charges, the troopers head to the starship John A. Warden for evacuation, only to see it leave dock without them – Minister Carl Jenkins has commandeered the Warden from Captain Carmen Ibanez, sending her to Alesia. Before leaving, Jenkins orders that Major Henry "Hero" Varro, the commander of Fort Casey's K-12 troopers, be escorted to Alesia as a prisoner. Alesia docks with Fort Casey for emergency evacuation of the surviving troopers, and the Fort Casey asteroid is successfully destroyed.
