Claude Jarman, Jr. (born September 27, 1934) is an American former child actor.

Biography

Repéré enfant, Claude Jarman Jr. débute à douze ans dans Jody et le Faon de Clarence Brown, sorti en 1946, aux côtés de Gregory Peck et Jane Wyman. Malgré ce début prometteur qui lui vaut un Oscar de la jeunesse en 1947, il contribue en tout à seulement onze films américains (dont cinq produits par la Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer), le dernier étant L'Infernale Poursuite de Francis D. Lyon (avec Fess Parker et Jeffrey Hunter), sorti en 1956.

Entretemps, il apparaît notamment dans le drame L'Intrus de Clarence Brown (1949, avec David Brian et Juano Hernández), ainsi que dans les westerns Rio Grande de John Ford (1950, avec John Wayne et Maureen O'Hara) et Le Relais de l'or maudit de Roy Huggins (1952, avec Randolph Scott et Donna Reed).

Après son retrait du grand écran, Claude Jarman Jr. revient brièvement à la télévision, dans un épisode de la série-western La Grande Caravane en 1959, puis en 1960 dans une autre série (également un épisode), avant une ultime prestation dans la mini-série Colorado (avec Robert Conrad) en 1979.

In 1883, the Boston, Massachusetts, company that owns the full-rigged sailing ship Gerrymander gives the ship's captain, Captain Boll, six months to show a profit for the company in the Gerrymander‍ '​s operations in the Netherlands East Indies. Facing both pirates and a trade exclusion policy that prevents him from carrying goods between ports in the islands, Boll looks for a way for the Gerrymander to make money. In Soerabaja on Java, Boll encounters an Indonesian whose life he once saved. The Indonesian tells Boll that native divers salvaged a fortune in diamonds from the sunken ship Pieterzoon, contrary to legend which says the diamonds were lost. The Indonesian directs Boll to a Chinese junk captain who has cargo that will lead Boll to the diamonds.

In the spring of 1865 in Nevada, a small band of Confederate soldiers disguised as civilians intercept a shipment of gold escorted by Union cavalry troops. Following a heated battle that results in losses on both sides, Confederate Major Matt Stewart (Randolph Scott) learns from a dying Union officer that the war ended a month earlier. Matt and his men transport the gold as planned to the scheduled rendezvous with Captain Petersen (Glenn Langan) who has been scouting the area disguised as a traveling peddler. When Petersen confirms that the war is indeed over and admits that he knew of Lee's surrender but made no attempt to tell the men, hot-headed Rolph Bainter (Lee Marvin) shoots him dead. The men briefly debate what to do with the gold. As ranking officer, Matt decides they will take the gold back to the South to help finance their country's reconstruction.

Ex-opera singer Helen Lorfield Winter (Jeanette MacDonald) rents a house in the small town of Brushy Gap, in the hills not too far from the Smokies, Blue Ridge, and Atlanta Georgia with her dog, Lassie, after the tragic death of her son. Growing attached to Jerry, but not wanting children so soon after the death of her own son, Helen leaves Brushy Gap to resume her singing career. While she is away, Jerry is caught in heavy rain returning Lassie home and develops pneumonia. Helen returns to Brushy Gap to find the owner of the house, Thomas Chandler (Lloyd Nolan), nursing Jerry back to health. Soon after Jerry has recovered, the orphanage catches on fire, and Lassie and Tom both rescue Jerry from the blaze. Helen then decides to adopt Jerry and remain in Brushy Gap.
