Michael Hamilton (Clark Gable), un avocat de Philadelphie, arrive à Naples quelques jours avant son mariage pour régler la succession de son frère Joseph avec un juriste italien Vitalli (Vittorio De Sica). À Naples, Michael découvre que son frère a un fils de neuf ans, Nando, qui est élevé par sa tante maternelle Lucia (Sophia Loren), une chanteuse de cabaret. Joseph n’a pas épousé la mère de Nando mais ils se sont tous les deux noyés lors d’un accident de bateau. La femme légitime de Joseph qu’il a quittée en 1950 vit à Philadelphie. Après avoir vu Nando distribuer des photos légères de Lucia, Michael veut inscrire son neveu à l’école américaine de Rome mais Lucia gagne la garde de l’enfant. Malgré une différence d’âge, une romance éclot entre Michael et Lucia et il décide de rester en Italie.

Frederick Henry (Rock Hudson) is an American officer serving in an ambulance unit for the Italian Army during World War I. While recovering from a wound in a British base hospital in northern Italy, he is cared for by Catherine Barkley (Jennifer Jones), a Red Cross nurse he had met earlier, near the front, and they engage in an affair. Frederick's friend, the doctor, convinces the army that Frederick's knee is more severely wounded than it actually is and the two continue their romance but never get married.

Propriétaire d’un grand magasin, le commendatore "Fernandone", est obsédé par un cauchemar où il rencontre un jeune homme qu’il ne connait pas mais qu’il déteste profondément. Un jour, un certain Walter Milani, docteur en sciences économiques, vient le trouver à la recherche d’un emploi ; il est timide et il a le malheur de ressembler exactement à celui que le commendatore voit dans ses cauchemars. Dès que ce dernier l’aperçoit, il entre en rage et, tout en criant : « C’est lui, c’est lui !!! », il lui ordonne de s’en aller. Son médecin traitant, qui est en même temps son meilleur ami, se trouve au même moment dans son bureau et il lui conseille de regarder la réalité en face : qu’il garde cet homme avec lui dans le grand magasin, qu’il lui donne un travail et son cauchemar disparaitra.
