David Richard Ellis (September 8, 1952 – January 7, 2013) was an American film director and stuntman born in Santa Monica, California in 1952.

Biography

David Richard Ellis naît le 8 septembre 1952 à Santa Monica en Californie.

Enfant, il se découvre un intérêt pour le surf, activité pour laquelle il se passionne au point de devenir un jeune professionnel. À l'adolescence, il s'oriente vers une carrière d'acteur et décroche de petits rôles, notamment dans le film The Strongest Man in the world (1975) qui marque sa première apparition au cinéma. Au début des années 1980, il évolue d'un rôle de figurant vers celui de cascadeur, d'abord face à Sylvester Stallone dans Rocky 3 (1982), puis dans Scarface (1983) et L'Arme fatale (1987) de Richard Donner.

Il réalise son premier film en 1996 : L'Incroyable Voyage 2 : À San Francisco avec Michael J. Fox. David Richard Ellis commence comme cascadeur ainsi que réalisateur de seconde équipe, notamment pour les films Forever Young, Beethoven 2, L'Enjeu, Peur Bleue, Sale Môme, Les Visiteurs en Amérique, Harry Potter à l'école des sorciers, Matrix Reloaded, ou encore Master and Commander : De l'autre côté du monde (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World), avant de réaliser son deuxième long-métrage : Destination finale 2 en 2003. Ce dernier film le fait alors remarquer et il enchaîne avec un troisième film : Cellular en 2004 avec Kim Basinger en tête d'affiche. Son dernier film,Shark Night 3D, est sorti fin 2011.

Son plus gros succès est Destination finale 4 avec plus de 186 M de $ de recettes dans le monde. En 2003, il est nommé aux Taurus World Stunt Awards à Los Angeles avec Glenn Boswell et R.A. Rondell pour son travail de coordination de cascades sur Matrix Reloaded.


Décès
David Richard Ellis meurt dans la nuit du 7 janvier 2013 à Johannesburg, en Afrique du Sud, où il venait de commencer la préproduction de Kite, qui devait être son nouveau film. Il est retrouvé sans vie dans sa chambre d'hôtel, sans que la cause de son décès ne soit clairement établie. David Richard Ellis était marié et père de deux enfants.

A college student discovers her dorm was once a notorious asylum. According to Winthrop's campus newspaper, The Johnsonian, a group of college freshmen with troubled pasts and nightmares are at Richard Miller University for orientation a couple of weeks prior to the beginning of classes. They stumble into an old restricted area and awaken the spirit of a mad doctor, who then proceeds to torture and torment the students in the same way he tortured the patients in 1939 at Burke Asylum. During the film, first String is killed, then Maya, followed by Tommy, school's caretaker Mackey, and Ivy. All are killed by the Doctor. In the end The Doctor chases Madison and Holt through a tunnel, an abandoned factory, and the woods until Madison kills him by stabbing him in the head, causing him to lose all his power and the souls that he has taken. The movie ends with Madison and Holt walking out of the forest finally being able to have closure with their pasts.

After witnessing gangster Eddie Kim brutally beat U.S. Prosecutor Daniel Hayes to death in Hawaii, Sean Jones is escorted by FBI agents Neville Flynn and John Sanders on a Boeing 747-400 to testify in a trial in Los Angeles. Despite increased security for the flight, Kim arranges for a time-release crate full of venomous snakes to be placed in the cargo hold in an attempt to bring down the plane before it reaches Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). To ensure the snakes attack the passengers without being provoked, he has one of his henchmen disguised as an airport ground employee spray the passengers' leis with a special pheromone which makes the snakes highly aggressive. The crate opens midway through the flight and the snakes make their way through the cabin. A couple having sex in the bathroom, and a man using the bathroom are the first killed. The plane's captain, Sam McKeon, investigates and fixes an electrical short, but is killed by the viper that caused it. Co-pilot Rick, unaware of the snake, believes Sam has suffered a heart attack and continues toward LAX.

The film opens with Jessica Martin (Kim Basinger), a high school biology teacher, talking to her son Ricky while dropping him to the school bus. She pieces together the wires of the broken phone and randomly makes a connection. She reaches the cell phone of Ryan (Chris Evans), who has just been dumped by his girlfriend, Chloe (Jessica Biel), for being irresponsible. He believes the call is a joke, but Jessica persuades him to go to the police. At the police station, Desk Sergeant Mooney (William H. Macy) tells him to go to the detectives on the fourth floor. He begins to lose the signal in the stairwell, so he turns back to avoid losing the connection. Meanwhile, Ethan returns to the safe house and asks Jessica about something she doesn't know.
