Nièce de l'actrice Fay Bainter, Dorothy Burgess commence sa carrière au cinéma muet où elle tient des premiers rôles dans des films hollywoodiens à petits budgets. Elle est souvent employée pour incarner des femmes d'origine hispanique. Burgess fut impliquée dans un accident de voiture en 1932 à San Francisco, dans lequel elle conduisait et dont le passager mourut. À la suite de cet accident, elle souffrit de dépression.
